Does the AC bonus from a shield and the AC bonus from armor stack?

---space to drop the real question out of the preview pop-up---

Something I find really funny in this forum, is how a thread with a question (in the subject line or preview) that you'd think could be quickly and easily answered ends up with 30+ responses.

Just amazes me how that happens. No other real comment on that subject.

But since you are in this thread anyway, here is a real question:

When someone at the game table, probably a newbie, asks a simple question, do you give the simplest, most straight-forward answer? Or do you add every little possible option?

For instance,

"Can I do X?"

Do you answer, "Yes" or "No"?

Or do you add, "If you had A and B feats, you could. Or if you are of the Y prestige class, you could, but only with M and N weapons. And the spell from H supplement will allow T classes to do it, if you are of E race."

When a player asks me if they can do X, I usually try to answer straight and simple. Then after the game session, I'd explain the other options if the player was interested. But I've seen some players who will take 10 minutes of game time to explain every possible option to the other player right then. This drives me crazy when it happens.

Yes.

That said, shouldn't the rest of your post be moved to General Discussion? And what's your point, anyway?
That rules debates during roleplay isn't fun? Well, surprise...
Or that some threads on this board remind you of this behavior? At least here it's not using any game time...

A lot of it comes down to this:

Simple answer then and there, expand on it later if they're still interested.

We are useless trolls and spammers who want to be right. That's why every thread ends up with 30 posts from me.

SRD equipment:
Armor/Shield Bonus: Each armor grants an armor bonus to AC, while shields grant a shield bonus to AC. The armor bonus from a suit of armor doesn’t stack with other effects or items that grant an armor bonus. Similarly, the shield bonus from a shield doesn’t stack with other effects that grant a shield bonus.

Rules debates sometimes run that long because they're not as simple as they would seem at a first glance...

If people have got reasonably involved questions, then I normally point them at the right bit of the book. Give them time to read it, then answer any questions.

Edit: Also what Darklone said. Troll + Spam = Fun. Unless you're a billy goat.

That monkey picture is bothering me. Can we have the dinosaurs instead? They were much more soothing.

Thanks but Waaah!
That beastie's also highly disturbing - if slightly hypnotic.

I forgot the other reason as well - arguing on the internet makes me feel big, clever and fulfilled. Me = Too .

I found it to be much easier to explain to someone that he's wrong or to get told that you're wrong. Pointing others to the book and explaining to them usually doesn't work right after killing their PC. :D

{Winning the Game!}
It's even more fun then.

Especially if you kill them in a random and arbitary way. For example give the character a no save fatal heart attack then point them at the rule 0 section. :D

I was thinking more about general inquiries before the game... I can see your point!
