Does your spouse think gaming is just for nerds??

I wanted a little input on this so I don't feel like the only one here. In her view I'm not going to a RPG store, I'm going to the 'nerd store'. And reading the forums on here from time to time is, you guessed it, the nerd forums. So am I the only one around here who has to put up with this??

Well, yes, my wife thinks that.

However, I first met her when she showed up to make a character for a D&D game I was running. And she introduced me to Live Action games.

So, I figure she knows what she's talking about :)

That's unfortunate, Brandigan. I bet she's secretly jealous and dying to run her own character, but just doesn't know how to ask!

Why yes, absolutely.

But she's good-humored about it. Recently she's been sending me a series of emails titled "Our Worlds Collide" with things like links to her favorite fashion/design blogs quoting Captain Picard or, just yesterday, a classical music reviewer quoting an entire paragraph from E.E. "Doc" Smith's Skylark of Space series.

No. My girlfriend finds that RPGs are for the more socially adept. She's a nerd and doesn't like gaming in a social environment, she'd rather stick to playing in isolation through a MMORPG with the rest of the "real nerds", not the "faux nerds" like me and my various gaming groups.

No. Geeks yes, nerds no. :)

I met her when she was GMing the Champions game in the area I moved into. We've been gaming together now for over 23 years (married for over 20).

My wife prefers the terms 'geek shop' to refer to our FLGS and 'geeking' for the weekly game, but she means it affectionately. She knew me almost 10 years before we started going out, and I was gaming all that time, so she's long since accepted my foibles.

She's a big science geek herself (being a science teacher) and reads some comic books, so we're very much a geek household.

(And I assume the nomenclature difference is due to the fact that I'm on the right hand side of the atlantic)

She doesn't really call my gaming geek or nerd stuff but considers it competition for attention so she doesn't really like it or the fact I like it.

She tried gaming twice. Darksun didn't do very well with her and she did Vampire: Masquerade which she liked but the group died (made up of 3 couples and one stay guy.

I am single. I have trouble finding a girl that can tolerate my geeky ways.

I once met a girl who loved pro wrestling. I hate pro wrestling, but I probably tolerate it in moderation. No matter, she hated Lord of the Rings movies, "talking trees are dumb."

I haven't really looked in a long time though. I have been focusing on my education and career.
