My best recollection is that the series starts with him already in the dollhouse as Echo's handler, with frequent allusions to his past history in law enforcement.

that sounds about right. thanks! it was making me crazy trying to remember that this weekend.

My thinking at this point, subject to change, is that the "real" Boyd Langdon's body was taken over by Rossum in order to put him into deep cover (though in that case, why appear to Caroline in his Boyd persona, unless finding out that Boyd is Rossum is also part of the great big super secret mega plan).

A good possibility. The theory I've been going with in my head (to make it work until i know the 'real' answer; though your theory has more basis) is that Boyd was replaced by another body as "Rossum." And so 'Boyd' was basically replaced and angry and wants to see the dolls revolt and bring it down.

But, that's all just wild and unsubstantiated theory to have it make sense in my head until we get the actual conclusion...

Hopefully, it will be satisfying whatever the outcome

Hm. Much as I liked it, I agree with RW, that there better be a pretty satisfying payoff to warrant whatever Rossum's plan is, or it will wind up looking pretty stupid in retrospect.

Trust in Joss. He's certainly never let us down at that level before, where a character's behavior makes absolutely no sense after a reveal. I think it's safe to say that there's at least one -- and probably many -- more big reveal that will surprise and enlighten.
