Doom of the Savage Kings

Llore frowns. "No, no, you've got it confused. Azbog is the Serpent and the Lady's tormentor and serves... another. One greater and infinitely more ancient and powerful." There is a nervous shifting of the young bard's eyes as if he is afraid to speak the name of Azbog's master or even to make oblique reference to him. He doesn't say anything else to contradict Kurl on the subject.

The pool of water is at a minimum 80 feet across and 40 feet wide and curves in a crescent around the head of the serpent mound and the circular stone inset within it. Examining the stone's detail or trying to move it will require one to cross the pool. It appears that the water is fairly shallow, no more than a foot or two at the most. The water is clear and the pool's bottom is smooth and sandy.

As Boral and Kurl step up to the edge of the pool to get a better view of the stone ripples begin radiating out from a point in the center of the pool. A massive, undulating column of water rises up from the spot swaying like some sort of elemental serpent and drawing back to strike.

[sblock=OOC]The elemental serpent is obviously hostile but slow enough in its rising from the pool that the party can act before it attacks.

The creature has an AC 14.[/sblock]

Kurl takes a step back and yells, "Tender, we could use your help up here. Why don't you bring some of our more burly friends?" As Tender rushes forward, Kurl casts a quick spell of Bless upon him.

Boral is a little less insane and backs up quite a few steps further than Kurl. As the dwarf, Tender, goes by him he casts a spell of his own on the rushing fighter. "Ah... he looks like a tough one. Hit him a good one for me!"

Tender growls, "Alright, if you're not intent on wielding a weapon and smashing this thing, then I suggest you back up!" He enters the fray, rushing past his companions in order to strike with both sword and shield.

Lizt sprang to action. She drew her short sword and darted through the shallow pool to attack the creature. Lizt's aim with her blade was true, and she struck the creature.Initiative 1d20+1 = 15. Attack 1d20 = 19. Damage 1d6 = 3

Alois's eyes widened, but the big man stayed true to his word, and stuck close to Lizt. He grasped his lucky polearm and jabbed at the creature once he got near enough to strike at it. Unfortunately, Alois missed.Initiative 1d20+2 = 20. Attack 1d20+1 = 5. Deed Roll 1d3 = 2. Luck 1d3 = 2. Damage 1d10 = 3.

Gratien drew a long bow, and quickly fit and arrow to the string. Gratien stayed well back, preferring to strike at the creature from a distance using his bow. He couldn't help, however, crying out Aedre's name as he loosed his first arrow. His first volley missed, but Gratien stood his ground and reloaded. Initiative 1d20 = 18. Attack 1d20+1 = 8. Damage 1d6 = 6.

OOC: GlassEye, DT, and/or Scott DeWar. I really don't think the modifiers I've added for attack and damage are correct, at least not based on Lizt's, Alois's, and Gratien's ability score modifiers. Could one of you please look at my character sheet in the RG and confirm that I'm doing this right?

[sblock=OOC]A straight die roll for Lizt seems right.

Alois' attacks are 1d20 + deed die (his starting luck modifier was 0 so the lucky weapon ability will never provide a modifier to his attack roll and his STR mod is +0). I'm not sure where you are getting the +1 or the luck die. (As a side note, thieves get a luck die when they burn luck).

Gratien uses Agility to fire a ranged weapon, so no modifier to hit there. He adds his luck mod. to missile fire; in this case, -1. With his attack modifier (+1 at 1st level) his total to hit modifier is +0.

Scott, after you post actions for your characters I'll make an update.[/sblock]

Franko shrugs and points his finger. he looks to the sky and says,"This is for the better of all. sorry" He points his finger and summons a missile of force. He hears the screams of thousands saying, though no one else does. "I said I'm sorry"
cast magic missile.

1d20+4=24, 1d10=6

He summons ball lightning that streaks to the elemental doing immense damage!

4d12+1=25

Homer rushes in! [spend 2 luck]
1d16+3=12, 1d16+3=9

Hank searches his mind for what to do . . . . .

he casts chill touch to miserable effects, though. His hands turn black and then the cold that develops just fizzles.

1d20+3=5, 1d4=2

For his own undiscernable reasons, or perhaps for the contrariness of it, Bobugbubilz refuses Kurl's spell. Kurl doesn't sense any anger directed his way from the demon god of amphibians but senses the god may be a bit easier to annoy for a while...

Boral's casting of Enlarge goes awry and the complex arcane formulas slip from his mind until he has time to rest and restudy his grimoire.

The clear water of the pool proves deceptively deep and Tender stumbles at the water's edge. Thrown off balance he isn't quite as able to defend himself as surely as he might normally manage.

Lizt's blade slice through the serpentine water elemental with a spray of droplets. The form of the creature flowed back together and Lizt isn't certain her attack had any effect at all.

Franko's magic missile, shaped like a ball of lightning and powered by the souls of the thousands dead on an alien world, darts past his companions and impacts the manifestation of Azbog the Serpent. Lightning plays over the surface of the water and Tender feels a tingle across his skin and up to the roots of his hair. The elemental collapses in a splash that sends water lapping over the edge of the pool.

Homer rushes in just in time to get covered in spray as the elemental is dispersed.

Hank is already in the midst of casting when Franko obliterates the creature but it is too late and the spell slips through his fingers to be lost until he can refresh his mind and study again.

With Azbog's manifestation destroyed the exterior of the serpent mound falls quiet (barring Llore's muttered words of amazement). Ripples die down and the group is left with the pool and the etched stone barring entrance to the grave.

Kurl: Disapproval on nat 1-2
Boral: Lost spells: Enlarge
Hank: Lost spells: Chill Touch

Clearly, Deuce has angered the dice gods. I wouldn't stand next to him if I were you.

Alois stood, dumbfounded, in the pool of water next to Lizt. "Was that magic? What happened?" He turned and looked at Franko, astounded.

Lizt nearly dropped her short sword at the sheer force of destruction of Franko's lightning spellwork. She eyed the pool warily, unsure of its depth, and started backing out of the water. Hey dark eyes searched for a way into the mound.
OOC: Lizt has find traps on her character sheet, but I don't see "search" or its equivalent. Her Intelligence is 14. Is there something I could roll for her to help her search?

Gratien removed the arrow he'd notched to his bow string, and stowed the arrow in its quiver. He lowered the bow but didn't put it away. A blond eyebrow quirked at Franko. "A most impressive display of eldritch might, young master." Gratien inclined his head at Frankie.

With Azbog's physical form disrupted the group has a better chance to look over the area. The pool is crescent-shaped and surrounds the head portion of the serpent mound where the circular stone, inscribed with spirals that resemble snakes themselves, is inset. There is no way to approach the stone without wading through the pool but even from this distance (roughly 40 feet) the stone inset in the mound looks like it would require great strength to move. Not impossible, just difficult. The pool is clear and shallow and the bottom is sandy. The group approached the pool by following a small stream. This same stream flows into the pool from along the side of the serpent mound but the body of the mound twists away for hundreds of yards and quickly obscures the source of the stream.

[sblock=OOC]This is Old School so search is generally handled by the player describing actions based on description of the area. I've tried to provide adequate descriptions for you all to work with. At this spot, the PCs first contact with the mound, the stone looks like the only way in.[/sblock]
