DotF Spell: Spikes

The spell grants an enhancement bonus to attacks.

This is not the same as the weapon itself having an enhancement bonus.

I don't think that it would work against DR, since it is not a +1 (or +2, as the case may be) weapon. It merely has a bonus to attack rolls, with a separate bonus to damage.

Let me put it this way, if I'm a dm this spell is never in the game. If I'm playing and a cleric, I always use this spell. Sure fighters wont get as much bang for their buck out of this spell. But for the cleric, is the club really that much worse than the heavy mace, I think not. Please give me a greater magic weapon, spikes(both extended) and a peristent divine faith so my measly club is doing +18 to damage without any str added into the mix. And for the fighter geez I kept trying to convince the guy to get an ironwood two handed sword so I could put spikes on it but he would never listen to me.

Does spikes list the sort of damage bonus you get? If it's an enhancement bonus, then it won't stack with your GMW.

(And to the person who said that a +2 enhancement to attacks != a +2 enhancement to the weapon: be careful, or your players will argue that spikes should therefore stack with GMW!)

At any rate, a fourth level spell and a third level spell and a ninth(!) level spell that give you +18 to damage isn't TOO unreasonable. If you're gonna blow that kind of magic, you should expect to be dishing out the pain.

Ironwood two-hander?! Whoa. My cleric uses a greatsword! You mean I can get one of these made from ironwood, and it would still have an edge on it and all?

I am not that familiar with ironwood. PLEASE tell me the stats on an ironwood greatsword. Is it the same as a metal one? What's the market price on it? Man, I want one now for the Spikes spell alone.

Thanks.

I'll be damned. I was right in the first place. That's what happens when I'm needlessly second guessed, I go and second guess myself.

Yeah, I've had a cleric that's been using this on a wooden maul since he was 5th level. Its a pain in the butt, but I allowed the spell. I guess I'll just have to get liberal with the Sundering and baddies using the same combo. Imagine, they get in a huge fight with a badass druid and at the end, they get a lousy unmagical stick for a reward :P

Oh man, that's just too funny!

The Magic of Fearun also has a wood that you can make swords and stuff with. It's cheap, and permanent; though it is up to the DM if Spikes will effect non-bludgeoning weapons (the spell description makes it look like the author assumed it was for clubs and such, but didn't find it worth while to say so explicitly). In our campaign we've seen some nice shield charges using spikes, rhino hide, and the appropriate feats.

Even though it tops out at +10, it's a very good spell to have around; though I think most clerics will end up using it on other people's weapons & shields rather than their own.

If you are a DM and want to be mean to your players, throw in a high level Treant/druid. It's hands, after all, are made of wood :)

As a PC, I almost always play clerics. I don't see a reason to waste money on a magic weapon when I have all these spells and the extend and persistent feats. I don't melee, and if I do, cast a spell (GMW) and I'm ready to go, or use that spell for the fighter, or use it for healing. It don't hurt me to have it prepared!

This was in a game while I lived in NY over 6 months ago, so I'm not sure about ti, but I beleive that it was not an enhancement bonus to damage and so it stacked.

And +18 to damage isn't a ton considering all those spells, but it lasted all day, and I really ended up equaling the fighter in mellee damage, and exceeded him in durability since I used a shield with magic vestment. And personally I think that is just sad.
