I'm so sorry for your loss. I wish I had some answers for you too, but no, unfortunately. :(

I hope you manage to track some of his family down soon. That would at least be something.

My condolences...

Would it be out of line to ask what happened? Was this a sudden thing? A tragedy? Or was he in his later years and passed of natural causes?

Nope not out of line. It was sudden to all of us. He had been out of work for over 6 months. Money was tight I know that. He had told us he was going to live with his uncle in NM. They found him in a very rural area of Wyoming. He has killed himself. Bad part is he never showed any signs of depression. We all knew he was going through a rough patch. We had offered to help. From what I could find he had ordered a lot of outdoor camping/survival gear and was going to go live alone in the woods. Still does not make any sense to me.

We can not track down any relatives. The trail ends in 1998 in NC. Not sure if his sister got married and changed names or what. Bad part is he never told us what his sisters last name was.

The other thing that made me mad is his gaming stuff still in his apartment. Since I'm not family they won't let me in to take it. Of course I have told them it would mean nothing to anyone but his friends. They refuse to budge. Hopefully when the manager gets back I can talk them in let me grab it all.

Trying to answer all the qestions at once here. Well the last campaign was started in FR moved to Wheel of Time(Party was this 1 Minotuar fighter, 1 human ranger, 1 human cleric, 1 human wizard, 1 gnome druid/thief and 1 gnome druid/ranger all male casters) then we moved to a combination of DBZ and DnD. Than back to FR during the time of troubles. Yes the characters were near epic level. He always made it a challenge. This was also a test for the spell point system we had come up with. Bad part was the campaign was near the end. We will never know how he want to finish it.

Thanks all

My condolences.

You mentioned "they" - do you mean the city/police/coroner's office?

IANAL - You can petition to become the administrator of his estate (if he died without a will). I have done this before for a tenant who died without a family or close friends (he was the last of his social circle - I knew that from talking with him). The state allowed me to become the administrator (different from an executor, since there is no will) and dispose of his property, pay his outstanding debts, attempt to find more distant relatives (a lawyer helps with this), and generally do stuff for the estate of the deceased. There are a number of responsibilities that come from taking this role.

You need to work with a lawyer for this. As the administrator, you'd receive up to 10% of the estate (before paying debts) as the fee for your services. Even if you are not interested in the money, it would allow the gaming mementos to be distributed as you see fit and appropriately handled (as part of your "fee").

This ends up being a lot of work; I don't suggest this for everyone, but you seem to have been very close. Talk with a lawyer if you feel this may be the right option. It may allow you to work closer with the law enforcement to find the family and see that the right things are done.

He has killed himself. Bad part is he never showed any signs of depression. We all knew he was going through a rough patch. We had offered to help.

Yikes!
My deepest sympathies. :(

What a sad story; it sounds like you were a good bunch of friends to him, so take some pride in that as you remember the good memories you all shared.

In this day and age, it's so hard to lose yourself in your own concerns, and gloss over the world around you., and to take your friends for granted.

Maybe some good will come out of this, and your words and actions in this thread will remind people to take stock of their friends; depression (and/or other mental handicaps) can sneak up on ANYONE, and there aren't always visible symptoms.

Again, my deepest sympathies.

Well I have good new finally. Talked with the apartment building manager. They are allowing me to remove all his stuff. Which is a good thing as he has a ton of notes for old campaign and new ones we never played. We are still looking for his family though. He had this habit of just using anything for a book mark. So after going through all his books and gaming equipment we (his friends that is) hope to find something.

Thanks

Evilusion

Best of luck finding his family.

You might want to try asking if anyone played with him when he was younger on a few messageboards, such as the WotC ones, rpg.net, and EN World. There might be someone who knew him, and knows his family.
