Downtown Indianapolis Food [New one every day!]

Today's place is another you have to drive to. But it's not far. I suspect that many of the walkable joints have been previously discovered by the Gencon masses.

Anyway, the only real reason to go to John's Famous Stew is for its namesake stew. The place is a smoky dive catering to the factories south of downtown. But if you can get over all that (or if you are into it), try some of the stew. It's really spicy and really good. Here's a review of the place: http://www.nuvo.net/archive/2004/01/28/a_beefy_taste_of_time.html

...The only problem I had with the Ram was the bartender that was working on Friday night when a large group of us went there after the ENnies. He made it very difficult to order drinks, and got angry when we asked him for our change (I wasn't going to tip him the change for a $20 on a single beer). Other than that, the food was great, and the wait staff was very helpful and friendly, and overall a great place to eat.

That guy was a dick.

I was there with Alsih20, Hellhound and a few other folks, and we were trying to order a round of drinks for folks at the table, and he wouldn't sell them to us.

We were like "Um, the drinks are for those folks over there...could you have a waiter bring them over?" No. If we wanted that we had to order from the waiter. "How about I carry them over to the table one at a time?" No, that's still us buying more than one drink each"

finally, I think we bought some pitchers, and were given several glasses for each pitcher. The guy was baffling ad frustrating.

That said, The Ram was amazing. the food was good, the atmosphere ws friendly, they ad gaming in the back room and (with the exception of dickhead bartender) They clearly wanted us there.

I also went to a Wings place with Alsih20 and Zarathustran which was great, but I can't remmeber it well...except that the DJ was a total chatterbox :)

I'll chime in with mine as well, since I live in Indy.

P.F. Chang's China Bistro
Circle Center Mall

Just a few minutes walk from GenCon, you don't even have to go outside. You MUST try the banana spring rolls. It's the cheapest, best dessert in town ($4.95).
P.F. Chang's is a national chain, though -- you don't need to go to Indy for that (in fact, my wife and I were just at the Northville, MI P.F. Chang's this weekend.) On the Cajun mentioned above, how does it compare to real, Southern cajun? Growing up not far from Galveston TX and the Lousianna border (well, not far by Texas standards anyway) I've been spoiled. There is no Cajun food worthy of the name in Detroit.

Massachusset's Avenue District is a great place to find local restaurants. Let's see if I can figure out directions.

From the convention center, take Senate or Illinois north to New York Street. Turn east and follow until you get to a funky five-point intersection. If you continue east, you will be on New York--wrong way.

If you turn due north and keep going that way, you're on Delaware Street--wrong way.

If you go northeast, you will be on Massachusetts. Along this street for the next few blocks are several rather good restaurants. If you drive under an interstate, you've gone too far.

Welcome to the real world. In the vast majority of the industrialized world, one cannot expect anything but saloons and similar establishments to be open extremely late. This is reality for far more places than not. You play Ugly New Yorker with great enthusiyasm, whether you are trying to or not.

JediSoth,

Thanks for your answers, I appreciate your reply. I didn't know about a White Castle in Indy. Cool!

and you Dogbrain, you didn't have to be rude. You may think what you want about me and such, but if someone is asking a question about your city, answer it or not. Don't be insulting. You can think "Only the big cities has places to eat, but we can't"

NY, LA, Chicago, SF - You're right Buttercup.

Atlanta, Miami, Detroit, Dallas - they have also.

Want to talk Midwest? Cincinnati, Louisville, Cleveland, St. Louis - they do too.

Columbus (where Origins is)? - There are at least 6 places.

Milwaukee? - besides Major Goolsbys & George Webb's, You have the Water Street Brewery. a Chili place that was near the Pfister Hotel. The Havana Club. Ma Fischers. The Rox. Art's Deli. Bella's Fat Cat. Numerous pizza delivery places. Need I say more?

I didn't ask "Where can I get caviar and aged prime rib at 3:00am" All I asked was "Why is last call at 2:00am but most kitchens close at 10:00pm." Pizza and wings are acceptable to me. I'm looking for other options.

BTW:There is a wing joint near Steak & Shake. Anybody remember the name?

With the long lines outside S&S and them running out of food, the need for an answer about a late night place wasn't out out of line. Instead, I get insulted.

Lastly, Yats was wonderful. A lovely lady I had met in Indianapolis took me there. Chaldfont, JediSoth, you keep giving out places, I will be sure to go to them on my next visit. 6 months to go! Yay!!
