I think a lot of players, probably myself included, wait for some kind of cue from the DM as to whether that sort of thing is something the DM wants to take into consideration. I don't usually pay any attention to things like NPCs and animals.. but most of the DMs I've had would have (or have) given my funny, blank looks if/when they were asked about, or at the worst end gotten annoyed at me for slowing the game down to worry about such things. Shame, that.

My paladin character in another game generally tends to the horses when we camp. We had to leave them somewhere so I made sure it was as safe a spot as possible. This is still before I have called my steed since the DM has said a horse wouldn't really be useful all the time...

I drew some comments and funny looks for unsaddling the horses and such. Wierd.

As a DM, I don't keep track of food, so I doubt they buy rations. Mounts though, I've always tried to get them to at least think of them, if not make them central to the story at that time, ya know?

Ah well.

Here's one for you;
The party has two pack mules, loaded with all their cold weather gear for the trip into the mountains. As they're approaching a city at the foot of the mountains, they see that the city is on fire, and army of orcs and ogre's and assorted nastiness abounds!

They run forward, hacking, slaying, hiding from the dragon, blah blah blah....

So the next session, I, the kindly DM, give them the update from their hiding spot. "The city is mostly silent, and Martin slipped out during the night to recover the mules from where they were wandering around outside the city..."

I don't think they even figured out they were lucky.

I can see it now, the party's stuck out in the middle of Nowhere (next door to Muriel and Eustace's place) with a ton of stuff, wanting to know why the party rogue forgot to pay the teamsters.:p

I would have had the players find the mules roasting over giant bonfires...each with an apple in its mouth. Just kidding.

Although, I have heard Orges enjoy eating horses (although Mules are a little tough), and that Bugbears are always on the lookout for new meat for the stew pot.

Yes, mounts that are not stolen or eaten after being left to fend for themselves would have been 'lucky' in my campaign. Very lucky indeed.

Mule-patay. Horse-pie. Anyone?

Hey, those wolves have to eat sometime you know.
After the party members keep kicking their butt, the wait until just after the party leaves and have a feast on the horses that were tied to the trees....obviously left as a party favor :)

Of course having a good taxidermist with excellent survival skills as a hireling around would help to... since you might want to stuff your favorite pony...which is currently hanging from the tree.

This sounds good... I remember reading somewhere about another(?) book for steeds but it amounted to class levels or templates for improved mounts, which seemed like overkill.

I believe Avalanche Press released a book on mounts recently. Unfortunately I haven't seen it in my local store to tell anyone where if any our products will overlap.
