Dragon #356

I hope the retcon isn't too jarring. We made it with the best of intentions. :)

Not at all. Though since me being the 3e 'n00b that I am, I'd never encountered their earlier incarnations so I wouldn't have noticed.

But hey, it's a constructive retcon with good intentions, and I think it's an interesting one so bully you.

And on a completely seperate note, the Ecology of the Linnorm makes me happy, both for its content as a whole, and the little reference to Nidhogg and its spawn chewing upon the roots of Yggdrasil in the Gray Waste. Very nice. Haven't had the chance to fully read through the issue, been busy with real life this week, but everything I've seen has been yummy.

The second reason was to pave the way for another group of dragons that are all chaotic.

Other than radioactives, I can't think of any unstable materials that might work.

I hope the retcon isn't too jarring.

Nah, it was just strange to read that since I remembered nickle dragons more than another of that family.

I noticed it mentioned 12 species of ferrous dragons, two that went extinct (or did it...? ;) ).

It'd be interesting to see a "Ferrous Dragons 2" article :D

I just want to know why his bounty is listed in gp. Or does that mean that he's an interstellar criminal? ;)

Error! Error!

It could be Bakkard duChagne placing the bounty on him. DuChagne prefers gold, even if it's not worth as much.

Cheers,

What names are you using Mouse?

Not 100% certain, yet, honestly. I'll be keeping "iron," certainly. Maybe "nickel," though that sounds kinda funky to me. I'll probably use "steel."

I might make use of some of the fictional metals--mithral, adamantine. I know those exist as epic dragons, but since I don't use epic material much, I can reuse.

I might even use platinum. Since Bahamut's a god now, I think it's fair to reassign his color. ;)

OTOH, I might just ditch the metallic names entirely. In at least one of my homebrews, I've changed all the normal dragons' names to indicate environment rather than color. "Black dragons" become "swamp dragons." "Green dragons" become "forest dragons." That sort of thing. If I use the ferrous dragons in a setting like that, I'll just figure out where I want them and name them accordingly.

In Dragonlance, one of the legends behind the origin of the chromatic dragons is that they were originally formed from base metals: iron, zinc, nickel, lead, and tin. They were corrupted by Takhisis, and changed into the red, blue, green, black, and white dragons they would become infamous as. All of these are alchemical metals known to people in our Middle Ages, so I think if you were going for a set of neutral dragons those are the ones I'd use.

Cheers,
Cam
