The same way people sell other stuff online?

They tell you the features... They show you screen shots... Give you preview blurbs.

Word of mouth. Advertisements.

I'm not saying you have to be super excited about it... Maybe it's not your thing. Maybe you won't ever buy it. But saying WOTC has to give out free stuff now or it's doomed to failure... Is a little strange to me. :P

Right now I think Online Dragon is kind of like a computer without any programs on it... Someone who doesn't know about computers might say.. this thing is lame... It doesn't do anything...

But once the owner starts putting programs on there it starts looking better and better, and doing more and more.

Plus you have to compare the DDI as a whole to paper dragon/dungeon. Because DDI and Dragon/Dungeon are now one in the same.

Except for the fact that a lot of people would have already seen free previews of it for 6+ months, saw that it was to their liking and decided not to spend their money on it. It won't be a product that most people will get sight unseen. They would have already had a 6+ month test drive. If you disappointed them in those 6+ months I don't see many people suddenly changing their mind when they now have to pay for it.

I do. :)

I think once it starts doing what it can do (like once they start having the ability to use the real features) people will forget all about the beginning and how it was barren.

It's just how people are.

Unless its still just as barren, in which case, everyone cancels and its a dismal failure.

That's my fear. That once the real deal is available and the subscription is required, that it won't be much better. That's bad for WOTC. I need to see something that gives me confidence NOW.

I'm optimistic about 4E, and I really hope the DDI works out. I hope its great. I don't want them to fail. But thus far, I really can't say I've got much faith. Past track records with software and online content added to the lackluster release of the "previews" leaves me with a bad feeling.

Come on Wizards, restore the FAITH!

Um, Ick

Okay, I am sorry, I do love WotC and I think they have some of the best gamers around, and i think some of the people workign there are simply great, fun folks. That said, I think the Dungeon/Dragon Online bit so far has simply "blown chunks."

If I was part of the marketing department I would consider what they have done so far a complete disaster. The writing is poor, the editing is poor, the art (while not my style in some cases) is decent, but as a whole it simply isn't "up to snuff," or at least not up to the quality standard set by Paizo. As far as I am concerned they have completely blown it.

First, this is the largest RPG company in the world and they are getting ready to release a new edition in approximately 8 months.
Second, part of that release is keyed on their online initiative providing players with tools online that they pay a monthly fee for. This absolutely requires they prove they know how to handle releasing online information and that they can effectively use the internet as a true tool for gaming.

Combine that and look at what they have provided so far. Are you really and truly impressed? Right now you can find free online resources for mapping, character sheets, etc. as well as one-time paid fees for programs that you can use to run games online with friends. So far WotC has shown us NOTHING as far as a Digital Initiative that you can't get for free or low cost online. For that matter, they haven't even shown us anything AS GOOD as what you can already get online, just flash programs and advertising.

So far their Dungeon and Dragon "releases" have been late, not up to the quality of Paizo's, and simply not the level they need to impress people into paying a monthly fee or subscription.

I don't care if their staff is working like crazy on 4e, that is their problem, not the customer's. If they don't have the manpower they need to hire more, it is that simple, they have no excuse. Make no mistake, every online post, online blog, and online "release" IS part of the marketing for 4e. There is simply no excuse for not doing a better job.
