Dragon 382 - Winning Races: Dusk Elf

Five minutes before someone makes an emo goody-goody dusk elf seeking to get back in Corellon's good graces and redeem himself amongst his former Eladrin kin. Ranger class, scimitars and black panther optional.

(Corellon, not Corellion! There is no i in Corellon! :( )

I like the idea of subraces, but don't like this required feat that adds nothing to my PC. I need to burn a feat to get access to the really interesting ones. At least the ones in FRPG gives you some benefit.

Adds nothing?

Duuuuudeee. You get to suddenly change your race ! Think about the possibilities.

1) Gain a level that grants a feat.
2) Go on a crime spree and make sure everyone sees your face.
3) Spend your feat
4) Enjoy your new complexion & profit. :p

Besides, with the retraining rules you can have your old look back when you level up.

Another plus: This only costs a feat. Blizzard charges you $30.00 to do this.:D

Wouldn't work. In PoLand, the authorities are aware that the experience points from a crime spree can sometimes cause a thief to change tint, sprout wings, ascend to godhood, etc.

That's even an official background. WOTC knows their audience.

I'd prefer some kind of wacky "cosmos" elf, that goes through various cycles. Like, phases of the moon, day/night cycles, eclipses, constellations, gargoyles, psychics!!

Combine with the similarly flavored Cosmo sorceror for the fun to begin.
1. According to official sources, the fun already began even before this article came out (it's all fun).

2. Strangely, with their compatibility with Sehanine, the "phases of the moon" stuff is already included in the Dusk Elf.

3. And even that wasn't needed, because Corellon him/herself was already Unaligned, so even the wicked Drow can rightfully worship him if they will. This leaves the Dusk Elves in the unenviable position of allowing worship of Corellon or else being worse than the Drow.

(Why did we need Dusk Elves again?)

Now, despite all of that kvetching on my part, I saw three interesting things in the article: the Backgrounds. That's some thoughful stuff there; I would prefer to have that more general, but PHB2 already provides a start toward the generality I seek.

I'm of the opinion that Corellon, much like the Raven Queen, is 'Unaligned' solely because that's what it says on his character sheet. :p (Except towards the other end of the alignment spectrum from the RQ. Admit it, Corellon, you only wrote down Unaligned instead of Good because it was new and edgy and cool.)

And lulz that Drizzt-clone is a background for them.

Starting to make elven subraces is not a good idea. 3.5 was jsut silly with them.

Every previous edition of D&D has been silly with elvish subraces. I am amused to see that 4E, after putting up some initial resistance, is slowly succumbing to their siren call.

Elves - Bet you can't make just one!

Long as they do this for other races I'm perfectly OK with it. And besides, there's some nice stuff in this article, both in crunch and in fluff. Elves just became some of the best avengers/assassins, moreso than before...

Technically, this isn't even the first subrace in Dragon, it seems we've all forgotten the Abyssal genasi from two issues back!
