Dragon Age 4 - now The Veilguard

Everything I've heard about this game so far seems like an improvement, but will no doubt cause ever-more complaining from people who wish for DAO 2, and have wished impotently for that for 14 years. Not here but I've also seen some incredible double-contradictory-whinges where people have simultaneously whinged that the game has "changed direction" but also whined that it should be like DAO because BG3 was a success - never mind that BG3 only succeeded less than a year ago and is nothing like DAO, and that that would require another "change of direction", the very thing they were moaning about! This to me says that, no matter how good the game is, it'll get a huge amount of negativity for not being whatever bizarre and unlikely thing fans imagined. The same risk exists for many long-time sequels. ME5, if it happens, will likely get similar treatment ("Oh this isn't totally different game I made up in my head? Guess it sucks then!").

The biggest straight upgrade from earlier ones for me that I've heard is that they're returning to the objectively superior design of the DA2 relationship system, where it was a love-hate dial, and you retained relationships and even in some cases romances (just different ones) with characters wherever you were on it, instead of people leaving and stuff (which is extremely hard to balance or make compatible with gameplay - you basically need at least 2x as many companions in case X guy of class Y leaves).

The general approach of a moderate number of companions and two accompanying you (presumably indicating more action-focused combat) also seems smart if they want success that isn't niche.

The title isn't as evocative, but it's indicative of a more focused game concept, rather just naming an antagonist - likely not even the main one.

It put the focus on the guy I'm going to hunt down and kill for betraying me in a spectacular fashion.
Except that's not what'll happen and never was, and it doesn't make sense, because at no point has it ever been suggested we're playing the Inquisitor. It would be absolutely bizarre to hold an equal grudge whilst playing an entirely different character, who has likely never crossed paths with Solas before.

Disappointed in the name change, less emphasis on your the hero and my gut is telling me might not be good

Dao with all of it warts is the best game in the series and if done over with todays graphics is as good as Bg3 .

Da2 and dai was better graphically but it felt like the developers (especially that leaked dai video) over promised and under delivered
They also have teased the warden fans for a long time (intentionally including dai with morrigan still having dialogue about him)

I think this is the last 1 as there’s no way ea just let’s BioWare stay the way it is for another 10 years

I hope I’m wrong about a lot of my speculation

It’s funny it was game of the year but most of my fellow gamer friends have never played it as opposed to all who played witched 3 and Bg3

I've been excited for the game, and will be buying it when it eventually comes out.

That said, there was a whole lot of smoke being blown in this update. Just lots of grandiose words about opportunities and such, a real feel good piece without much meat.

Also it's Dreadwolf. Not "The Dread Wolf". If the general manager, plus everyone he gets to proofread before it goes live, can't even get the previous name of the game right... well, that doesn't make me hope.

Bah. Each of the DA games have had points of brilliance and points of disappointment in mechanics, gameplay, and scope. But they usually have good NPCs, let's hope that some of our favorites have continued along with us.

I meant me the player. I’m still holding a bit of a grudge.

Mark of a good plot twist, come to think.

Bioware got their lunch so thoroughly eaten by Larian and BG3 that there's no way DA4 can measure up. I'll watch the gameplay but it sounds like it'll be more on the action-y side of the equation.

But then, my fav has always been DA2, or as I know it, the one where Hawke and a bunch of disaster bisexuals wander around Kirkwall, trading barbs with each other and weapons and spells with whoever interrupts their banter.

If it is anything like Inquisition or Andromeda, then I am out. Inquisition was terrible with 100 grind for 6 hours of story. I detested the kill 10 bears, fetch, and telescope quests. I felt cheated after 117 hours to beat the game.
