One thing that does disappoint me in this ToC is the inclusion of so much material from very recent Dragon Magazines. 2 of the 5 new races were released in the last year - the Diabolus and the Lupin; in the PrC section, the Force Missile Mage and the Shaper of Form are both from the past year and the Osteomancer is from the year before that.

Those stand out to me anyway. Out of 300+ issues, I'm very surprised that almost half the new races and a third of the PrC's didn't need to be updated to 3.5, they were already 3.5 when released. Considering this is a book that's supposed to "bring back the best of the past, fully updated for 3.5", using articles from the past year seems a tad, well, lazy.

That's my big disapointment with this product, too.

But over on the Paizo boards, a staff member (I believe Erik, but I'm not 100% sure) responded that the inclusion of so much recent material was partly due to the time pressure to get this first volume produced. There just wasn't enough time to convert a lot of older stuff to 3.5--hence, a lot of stuff that was already 3.5 or could be converted quickly (3.0 stuff).

I still don't know if I'll buy this book or not. But I eagerly await volume II.

This is the one thing I feared when I heard that they would produce this book. I was afraid that they would add a lot of recent crunch rather than grab the best of the older material. I have all the recent crap. I want things that we cannot get anymore.

I think that Paizo has failed on this one. I am sure it will be a nice book, but not something that will make my "buy" list.

Just out of curiosity, if the bleeder is the death kiss beholder from Monsters of Faerun, why'd WOTC let that one in?
Actually, the bleeder is a "baby" death kiss beholder - they're tiny, and are almost a 'swarm' creature. They showed up in one of Ed Greenwood's Wizards Three articles.

"wait and see" is usually the best approach to take on any new product, IMHO. ;)

"And as the mob closed in on the Dragon Compendium, for another uncounted time, BOZ cried out to them, "Wait and see... wait and see..." but his cries were soon drowned out by the clickity clackity noise of the mob's postings....SUCKZ!!!"

Path Magic by Wolfgang Baur

I didn't see it in the list but was wondering if anyone (d20 publishers or fan publish) converted the Path Magic article by Wolfgang Baur to 3.5? I've got the Dragon CD Rom and the original Dragon issue (can't remember off the top of my head which one) but I always used that system in my later 2nd Ed dm'ing years.

I think a system pretty close to that is used in the Green Ronin Advanced Player's Manual for the Eldritch Weaver class.

i still don't see how people can declare something to suck sight-unseen without prior similar material to judge it against... but they are doing it en masse, regardless. so i will step out of the way of the angry mob instead. ;)

Quite simple. "I wanted to see x, y, and z updated. I hated a, b, and c that the Dragon Compendium used." I'm not saying that they did a bad job or anything. The book isn't out. I just know that it doesn't look as promising as it could've for me personally. I'll look it over when it comes out and make my judgement then but like others, there were some misses that I'm still like.... ?
