Dragon Disciple: good for a Duskblade?

I concede the point. There are no prestige classes that are better in the narrow field of making a character into a half dragon. For that specific purpose, the Dragon Disciple is infinitely superior to all other prestige classes.

But if you want a mechanically strong prestige class, look elsewhere*.

The purpose of the class is to become a half dragon. That's why it is called the Dragon Disciple. If you ignore that then of course there are many better prestige classes, but that defeats the point. It exists because Sorcerer power has a back history of coming from Dragons and this class helps unlock that ability.

Now, it is no surprise that in that in the many years after the class came out (as it was one of the first prestige classes printed) that power creep has made classes that are more powerful then it. But none of them replace what the class was meant to do. People who look at the class expecting something else will of course be disappointed.

The purpose of the class is to become a half dragon.

The purpose of the class is to give melee characters with a dip in spellcasting classes a way to increase their power, ultimately cumulating in a change into a half-dragon. It's not for the specific purpose of turning into a half-dragon.

It is only worthwhile in core. Out of core, there are so many good options that a Duskblade shouldn't bother. This is the question the thread was created to discuss. I find your point about the original purpose of the Duskblade somewhat irrelevant, since even if it is the best class at doing what it is designed to do, it is not a good prestige class for a Duskblade.

Good for what though? Now we start making assumptions on what is good for other people and their games. There are groups of people that this would be fine for because they don't care if a character is sub optimal and not that powerful. They have fun with characters and playing it how they see fit.

In other groups like it seems you are coming from the mechanics are the most important and if the bonuses don't add up to be the very best possible then that option is discarded.

Since it has more focus on fighting than casting, would Dragon Disciple be a better PrC for a Duskblade than a Sorcerer?

For fighting, it would seem.

Although I guess it would be better for a Duskblade than a Sorcerer.

I wasn't aware that judging a PrC by the parameters laid out by the original poster of the thread was "making assumptions".

The thread clearly isn't about how flavorful and fun the Dragon Disciple is because that is never mentioned as the topic of discussion and furthermore, we are in a rules forum for the discussion of rule and mechanics as opposed to flavor.

"and non-system-specific topics"
The full quote is "Discussion of all RPGs and non-system-specific topics". You discuss RPGS as well as non-system specific topics there.

It means something different when you don't take it out of context, doesn't it?

While this forum is called the 3e rules forum it is the place to discuss anything 3e related.
This forum is actually described, in full, as "This forum is for pre-4E D&D Rules questions and queries about character design/tweaking." Those words do not mean "anything 3e related".

Let's take a different approach for this thread:

What is the best use for a Dragon Disciple, assuming 10 levels in DD? What is the best dragon disciple we can make?
