In this thread I've been presenting information on my homebrew modern day D&D setting. In the most recent posting I said a few things about the Dragon Earth cosmology, and thought it would be a good idea to fill you, the reader, in on how it differs from the standard D&D cosmology.
Which is, you can't travel to the afterlife physically. You can do it through a spirit journey, and most people do it after they die, but you can't walk there.
Furthermore, while Dragon Earth has gods, it also has a fellow best known to mortals as, God. God runs the show. God started the whole shebang and keeps tabs on it as it progresses.
The gods fall into three groups. First are those who serve God. Set of the Egyptian pantheon is one of these, having been a Christian since the 1st century A.D. In the second group are those gods who would much rather be left alone. The Norse trickster, Loki is numbered in this group. As long as God lets him be Loki is happy. The last group is made up of those gods who hate God and wish Him dead. The Babylonian Marduk reviles God and is constantly looking for some way to bring God down, and regain his rightful place as ruler of the universe. Marduk has issues.
Helping (if you want to call it that) the last group are the fiends. Evil beasts who absolutely detest God and want to see Him and His creation done away with. Either oblivious to the fact it would mean the end of reality as they know it. Or eager to see it end.
In addition to some small 'd' deities God also has angelic powers. Including the demons of Hell. Demons in Dragon Earth are lawful good and are assigned the job of punishing evil doers. Their immediate boss is Satan, the Devil. Who is the only devil, accept no substitutes. Satan is not out to tempt souls into Hell, he gets enough as it is. Since the fiends are into tempting people into damnation, he has a strong hate on for them. Satan would love nothing better than to see mortals cast off evil entirely, thus removing the need for Hell and allowing his return to Heaven and God's side.
And there you have the basics of Dragon Earth cosmology. Just remember, Dragon Earth demons want you to stop doing evil, and they will do really rotten things if necessary to get you to stop. Dragon Earth fiends on the other hand urge you to commit evil deeds, and will use whatever methods deemed necessary to get you to do evil.
