Dragon issue #329 contents

In the standard D&D cosmology, the Outer Planes (for the most part) have layers. Each layer is infinite, and part of the plane in question. For example, the Seven Mounting Heavens of Celestia has seven layers in it. Likewise, the Nine Hells of Baator has nine layers. The Abyss, in this case, has an infinite number of infinite layers (though older editions said it topped out at 666).

The concept of "layers" can be hard to imagine from a physical standpoint. The thing to remember is that this is metaphysics. A second layer of a plane doesn't have the first pne physically above it. Rather, the second layer has it's own sky, ground, etc.

No, what I think he means is, since 1e, Pazuzu's domain has been the skies of all the layers of the Abyss; he's never had a layer of his own. But now, he apparently has Layer 503 to himself. The poster doesn't like the change.

Ah, that does make more sense. Well, Torremor was introduced back in 2E Planescape for Pazuzu's home. The rationale there, and here, is that he doesn't fly all the time, and does need a place to store his possessions, have his minions cogregate, etc.

The new article attempts to weave all of these official nuggets into a cohesive whole. Pazuzu claims the skies above all the layers, but he "nests" on a specific layer.

Whacha need to do is have recurring articles on Oriental Adventures (using Kara-Tur as the setting, sure it's an FR setting but Kara-Tur is isolated enough to be its own campaign setting in some peopl's games and it has enough oriental variety, you have Japanese, Chinese, Phillipians, etc. all in one place) AND you need to have a recurring Psionic and Epic article.

We plan on supporting most of the aspects of playing D&D in future issues. Take that vague answer as you will. ;)

I enjoyed this issue, though I've mostly skimmed the articles so far. One comment I had on the demon article is that all the stated monsters were very high level. I'd like the demon princes to have servants that go across many levels so that they can be recurring villians throughout the campaign.

Good point. We did introduce the "aspect" element, which is about half the CR of the main demon, but it's still pretty high. Lower-HD servitor creatures would be a good addition to these articles, to be sure.
