Dragon magazine is considered official!

Here is an example of what I am talking about...

I find a spell in Masters of the Wild, and then I find a rule in Dragon magazine that completely changes what Masters of the Wild says about the spell. Which one do I follow? Which one is right? Both are now part of the official D&D rules-set.

The right one is whichever one you decide is right. You are the DM, its your campaign.

Whatever book I allow at the table is official for me. My word overrides and overrules ANY supplement, magazine, book, or rules lawyer (be it a WotC book, Dragon, Necromancer book, SSS book, it doesnt matter). I am the DM. MY word is official in my campaign.

What'd you expect? It's his e-mail that you're calling spurious. If you didn't want to be called out for taking yourself too seriously, you shouldn't have insulted his answer and his profession.

I think he didn't even realize that, i wouldn't be surprised since we all use nicknames around here and many people don't read the signatures most of the time...

I think that official is Rule 0, everythig else is guiedlines...

Didn't this fight about what's "official" and what's "not official" spring up before? Like, last year or something?

It't not as regular as the "WotC is going bankrupt/will sell DnD/destroy everything DnD is about/etc..." or "Armageddon is coming (for the 2003rd time)" things, but it is fairly regular. ;)

greymarch,

When did you send that e-mail and when did you receive a reply?

I am curious. (This has nothing do to with the topic at hand.)

Peace and smiles :)

My gaming group only uses the official rules and we try to use all the official rules. We run a tight ship, and we like it that way.

Anyways, I digress. Spread the word...Dragon magazine, Polyhedron magazine and Star Wars Gamer are considered part of the official rules-set.

I know what you are saying, but remember all of Kingdoms of Kalamar are Official as well. Maybe sticking to core rules only would suit you better.

Spread the word? Nah, I don't think so.

"Official" has no bearing on whether the material is of high quality or not.

I guess my reaction could be summed up as "So?"

There are a lot of official rules and background material that I blithely ignore and I think Dragon and Dungeon will just augment that list.

I mean, the Planes, as written, are very, very official and very, very ignored in my campaigns. Ditto 75+% of the monsters, most PrCs, a lot of weapons, spells, and magic items, the gods (and rules for handling same), etc.

In other words such a pronuncemento makes 0% difference to my game.

RPGs are here to exercise imagination and encourage group storytelling, not to blindly follow rules minutiae -- I leave that to lawyers...

Yes, but it's okay since the subject appears on the "Official EN World Subject Rehash" schedule. I'd send you a copy so you can be informed, but I'm not scheduled to be helpful for another few days...

Now let's talk about something totally new, like which D&D edition is best...

...or perhaps we could debate about the usefulness of the BoEF...

:D
