Dragon Magazine: Monster Ecologies to be released!

Okay, let's put this back into perspective. The Warhammer books are books, which are printed on higher quality material, and hardcover books at that. WotC adventures have recently gone up to $15 and I think we can agree 50 cents a page is not what you would expect to pay for most RPG products.

If the ecologies were a $20 softcover I would not complain. A $20 softcover is pretty reasonable. I would pay $25 for a softcover. But apparently it is a magazine, printed on magazine paper, with color runs and pages coming loose or warping from being held or bent. It's the material, not the price, that I'm complaining about.

I've never been a huge fan of ecology articles. The information is useful if you are developing a new campaign world from scratch. I wish they provided more options. They read like "this is exactly the way things are" when I would rather see "here are some options". They're a little too much "in character" for my tastes.

The paper stock we're using will make this feel more like a softcover book than like a magazine. A good comparison would be "Red Hand of Doom," which is the same number of pages and has a similar stock.

This doesn't interest me too much. I'm sure it's great for many, but I am prone to giving my own ecologies of creatures in my own games.

It just makes me wonder even more why WotC is procrastinating on a Dragon Compendium Volume 2? :\

Back in the late 80s/early 90s they did. Pretty cool too, since it was told as a story by someone who was taken prisoner by the gnolls, and the actual "ecology" parts were footnotes at the end of the story.
Any idea what issue that's in? I have that 5-CD Dragon Magazine set I'd like to look it up in.

Oh daaawwg, I don't remember. It's been years. I would focus on the period when they were hyping Dark Sun, that's about as good as I can get it.

IIRC it is in 173. It has a Dark Sun humanoid (gith?) holding a bell looking down on a caravan.

Edit, pity this is only going to be the new ecologies. I like the Monster Hunters and the 2 gnomes with their human ally, both by Richards.
