DRAGON MAGAZINE: What would you do?

I agree with pretty much all of KDLadage's suggestions.

Concerning the fiction section, I don't mind it so much, but I almost never read it. Probably because the few times I did I was rather unimpressed with the quality, though it was a long time ago.

I really can't stand Star Wars fiction, after the (IMO) terrible mess that's been made out of it, but one nice thing that was in Star Wars Gamer (and SWAJ before that, for d6) were stats for the characters, etc. from the story. This would allow people who don't read it to at least get some use out of it, and perhaps even get them to read the story if the characters are intriguing.

My suggestion to bring back was also going to be Giants in the Earth :) I change the names (or sometimes not) and drop them straight into my campaign as NPCs. Often the historical based characters are a lot more well-rounded than their fictional counterparts, not to mention promoting a healthy interest in history.

The other feature I'd like brought back is Cities of the Ages. Similar to the above, these are easy to drop straight in. The maps are great - it takes a lot of work for me to develop an 'organic' feeling city, but this feature made it easy (I'd scan the maps and use them as the basis for my own cities).

Other things I'd like to see are similiar - little bits of campaign info. Writeups of countries, regions, cultures, fortresses, towns, characters, etc., with some background and some crunchy bits.

What would I get rid of? The only thing I can think of at the moment is 'fluff' articles - there's been a few too many lately. I don't really need a discussion of how to roleplay X type of character, etc., though I do see the need to have these in the magazine. I'd like at least half-fluff half-crunch, or a slight favor towards crunch.

An adventure that were removable from the magazine is an example -- sure, this is what Dungeon is for -- but in Dragon, think of it this way:

Back in the first few mags after the 3e release, remember the Dwarves issue? Good. Now, think how handy it would have been to have the "class combinations" article a center-removable article so that you could include it in a campaign binder.

It does not have to just be adventures.

I remember seeing a post from Dave Gross (then editor of Dragon) a couple of years ago that said they did a market analysis, and basically there were as many people that wanted the fiction section that didn't.

My favorite section of Dragon used to be the Previews of upcoming products. Thanks to EN World, though, I guess that section is no longer necessary. :)

My to the Two the Cents:

What I really Like, currently: Campaign components is a biggie. I love getting new options. Really, really do. Supplemental optional rules articles like house rules, levelling weapons, druidcraft...heck even the ecology articles and new monster/spell articles are good, if kept in check. Campaign setting material isn't bad, either. While I have no great desire to use the Shannara material, for example, as I don't care for Shannara: I still stole the material for use. Anything that gives me ideas, I like.

What I really don't Like, currently: Silicon Sorcery. Stop it. Stop it now. Really, I mean it. It's a waste of page count, IMHO. For the games I do play, the feature seems off-base: for the games I don't, it just seems silly. I'd rather see an actual honest-to-goodness review of the game (or a round-up article of fantasy-related games) rather than this stuff. Ugh.

The Forgotten Realms articles are probably popular, but not with me. Not sure why...they're attractive enough. Maybe I just think it belongs in Dragon, or something. Generally, I ignore the fiction, with the GRRM novella being the exception rather than the rule. It's not that it's bad, and much of it is not, but I have precious little fiction reading time as it is.

What I'd like to see more of: More fun articles like the movies and music articles. I disagreed a great deal with them, but they were fun reads, regardless. More campaign components! They're useful and fun. Historical articles (like famous figures in history, ancient cities and historical references with gaming links) are all very welcome. More stuff like Monte's articles on running your game, or how to handle specific situations...anything that improves me as a gamemaster or my skills is good. Reviews of good d20 websites or d20 software would be useful, especially for folks who are less involved online (such as a comparison of PCgen, DMGenie, TwinRose and RPMaster).

That sounds good, but how would they decide which article is notebook worthy? FR Fans might like to have all those articles on a specific site removable. Monster fans might like all the monster articles removable, etc. I think it would be difficult to just choose one, and personally I don't want the whole magazine to be put together with liquid rubber. :)

Rather not see a complete adventure as a removably middle. Isn't that was Dungeon is for?

It's what the created Dungeon for, so that you have MORE adventures then just a thin one out of the Dragon( thank Odin that Dungeon is going monthly !!)

Silicon Scorcery should go, have Fiction bi- monthly at least but keep the DMs workshop stuff comeing these are great !
