DragonBall Z Live-Action Movie

This would be the second live action movie set in the Dragonball universe. The first seems more worthy of MST3k-ing. I've seen it at Suncoast but I'm waiting til it hits a bargin bin, were I to get it.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122050/

Hopefully FOX's DBZ movie ends up better tho I'd rather see a live action Lupin III (Spielberg's considered it I think). Unfortunately, that would probably suck as well.

I am only poking fun at DBZ, please don't take anything seriously. My roommate loves the stuff and has like a million DBZ tapes.

I tried to get into it once. My friends said watch a week of it. So I did, on Cartoon Network a few years ago.

You want to know which week I watched DBZ---

When for the ENTIRE week for EVERY episode Goku was summoning the spirit bomb and THEN to top it off after sitting through that he launched at the man/women thing Freeza and NOTHING HAPPENED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That ruined it for me FOREVER.

I'd say that my deconstruction came from the fact that I was being forced to watch the show with a loud-mouthed idiot who was also a raging homophobe.

So I just charted chiming in with things like, "Oh, so they concentrate and their faces get all tense and they grunt and heave and then they spray these enormous bubbling streams of energy? Thank goodness there's nothing sexual in that." Or, "Yes, thank you, dubbing-master. They're taking off their clothes before the fight because they use weighted clothes to practice. That's all it is."

He got incredibly defensive and turned the darn thing off after a few minutes.

My work was done.

LOL! Ok, well now that I know the context it makes more sense. Nice work by the way, I gotta admit I probably would have done the exact same thing if I were in your shoes in that situation. :D

Yeah at least until the end. But the Androids and Cell Saga kicks ass. Same with the lead into the Frieza saga, the Sayian Saga. Those were good sagas.

I like DBZ but it all boils down to essentially... Goku getting hurt. Everyone powering up. Everyone getting beat down. Goku healing and coming back. Goku and bad guy duke it out.

I admit that they mixed it up with Cell and had Gohan do his thing but went back to super bad with Bu.

The Manga is actually a lot clearer on a lot of this stuff and doesn't go into the boring detail and stupidity of the anime.

I think that's a bit unfair. Like I pointed out in my joking LotR synopsis, you can simplify anything down to the point of stupidity. After all, Casablanca was just about a bar owner whose ex-girlfriend shows up with a new guy. :)

There's alot more to it than that. You've got friends, working with enemies, the afterlife, kidnapping, discovering your heritage, confronting the one responsible for the death of you people, who do you trust?, time travel, androids, genetic engineering, comedy, becoming a father, children growing up, fame for false accomplishments, teen angst, and, finally, going toe-to-toe with something the basically killed the gods.

And, while the anime does drag during the Frieza saga, everyone should know by now that that was due to the anime running at the same time as the manga and the need to slow down the story so as not to get past it.

Just consider the filler episodes like the clip episodes that air in US cartoons. No one is forcing you to watch them and you can just skip them without missing anything important.

And, as to Goku showing up to fight the bad guy, well, duh, he's the hero. :D

Actually, when it comes to the various "big bads" (to borrow a term from Buffy), Goku needs the help of others to take most of them down. The only one he beats without help is Frieza...and then Trunks shows up and negates that.

But even here, it's still the same thing. How many of these enemies actually stay enemies? Bu? Nope. Vegeta? Nope. Picoolo? Nope. Once you've seen the Vegeta bit you've basically seen the whole thing. More powerful foes that simply become more powerful as the series goes on.

Like I said, I enjoy it, but it's strength is not in it's storyline.

Raditz, Nappa, the Ginyu Force, Frieza, Androids 17 & 19, Dr. Gero, Cell, Babidi, Daborah (well, he turns good after he's killed), Babidi's minions, and, finally, Buu splits in 2, one good, one evil.

And, sure, it is about Goku fighting a series of bad guys, but so is every superhero comic out there. The only difference is that it's a finite story.

Ultimately, it will all come down to how good the film script it. Chopping out all the filler, I think this could be a great film.

Well, it would also depend on how good they do the hair. :)
