Drawing a ranged weapon

For those realists out there, a bow or crossbow I've always heard loses some of its strength the longer it's got tension on it, so they're typically stored tension free -- uncocked or with the bowstring removed.

With that in mind, IMG I'd allow a player to load their crossbow before we rolled initiative if they're expecting a fight or potential danger, but if they get ambushed or whatever they'll have to draw and then load it before firing.

Well, in response to the OP, the answer is no.
Unless the PC specifically says they're wearing a loaded crossbow.
Which .. although possible, can have issues .. from the bolt falling out the top to accidental firing.

For the sake of convenience, I'd go with no.
