Drinking While Gaming? Warning -- mature content (I hope)

My group is more about the socializing, beer, and pizza than the game itself. It is more of an excuse to get together and hang out than to play a game. We generally stick to beer rather than hard liquor though, as most people have to drive, and we get a little crazy on the JD.

I often have 2 beers or a glass of whiskey when gaming (more or less for medicinal purposes. Yes, I'm serious).

Then again our sessions can last 8 hours easy, and I stop 3+ hours before we finish.

Like sugar, if it is disruptive, it is too much :)

Man, this is a sore point for me!
I'm of the opinion that a beer or two is nice during the game. Getting drunk (or otherwise inebriated) absolutely, completely, ruins the game.

Yup! That ENDED my last campaign. Everybody in my group is 30+ and as the DM, I got to the point where I started to burn out because players couldn't remember their names, much less the game. One session also led to a pretty unpleasant experience where I had to chew out one player because he was getting downright rude while drunk. It's our 'relaxation' night, but some people get too relaxed.

When the players don't give s S+(t enough to limit their intake, THIS DM found that I didn't give a S&_T about them. Game over.

Now I'm in a quandry. What do I do in the future? We're all adults right? Do I treat everybody like babies and say 'no -OH' or what?

I had a player join a campaign who asked me prior to joining if there were any drugs or alcohol consumed at the games. I let him know that normally there was not, although I wouldn't be advserse to splitting a six pack some night after we concluded an adventure.

Turns out that this guy was a recovering alcoholic, and didn't want to get involved with a campaign that would have anything that might get him into "trouble". I learned a lot about addiction from him, and now I don't serve any alcohol during games.

Personally, I've never seen any significant benefit added to a game by alcohol.

When I'm running:
No drinking, no drugs, smoking done outside. After the game, everyone can do whatever they want.

When I'm hosting:
As above, except that drugs and alcohol are not to be brought to my home (or at least, I can't find out about them).

Fortunately, this issue hasn't come up amongst those I play with. People tend to get distracted enough without chemical assistance, and I dislike alcohol and drug use. I have little problem with others partaking of such things, so long as I'm not around (in the case of drugs or moderate and up drinking; minimal drinking doesn't bother me).

Pretty much any other snack, beverage, or even meal is fair game, so long as it isn't too messy and dangerous to game material.

When we play we'll typically have caffeine, food, maybe alcohol (beer) and we used to smoke pot.

I don't reccommend pot if you want to have a good session because it goes to the dogs in so many ways.

Save the pot for later.

I don't think any of this is a question of benefiting a game. What benefit do pretzels and soda bring to a game? They don't really bring any either other than being tasty treats for hungry and thirsty gamers. For those of us who do drink beer (or other alcoholic drinks), it's a question of drinking our beverages of choice when we are thirsty gamers. And happy gamers are having more fun than less happy gamers settling on whatever is available.
I drink less soda while gaming now than beer. Interestingly enough, I get more gassy and uncomfortable on soda than I ever have gotten with beer.
Now in a situation with a recovering alcoholic, if you're playing a friendly game (and you should be, right?), then respecting other people's limitations should take precedence over having a tasty treat of primary choice, people's healths being generally more important than our own fleeting satisfaction. That's certainly sufficient justification for making the smoker take his breaks outside when he's jonesing for nicotine, it should also be sufficient for keeping a lid on the alcohol when the recovering addict is playing and trying to stay healthy.

We rarely drink, but the group I've been playing for the past ten years always have a joint of pot or two during game sessions. I never do, because I rarely smoke, and when I do, I get *S*T*O*N*E*D*. I tried, and the game became a giggle-fest. But they never disrupted our games because of smoking. Never. So I don't mind at all.

That said, if it DID disrupt it, I would put an end to it right then and there. Like Russ said, I don't spend hours prepping a game to have some :):):):)-faced moron destroy it.

We actually played in a pub for several months when we were wild, young and had nowhere else to play, so it is not overly surprising that we are prone to having a drink or two. And as we are still pretty much the same group and we have always socialised with each other over drink, roleplaying night has always included drink.

I will always have a bottle of wine and a beer or two, or maybe a fair whack of Stoli. Only one person of our group does not imbibe much, and that is because he drives.

Drink can be a pain in the arse when players get too drunk, but you know what so can a lot of other things. When a player is silent, or does not know (and will not learn) any of the rules, or is just feuding with another player. Booze might sometimes make our campaign worse but a lot of things do that. It certainly makes the night better for me as a social event.

As to drugs, at the moment I would have to refuse, as a non smoker for nearly 15 months I would be keener on the fine tobacco than anything else. God I miss smoking so badly. If anyone else wanted to then I would be OK with it, they are all responsible adults who are my friends. As we live in the middle of nowhere like we do we don't play with other groups or players, I may have had different views if I had to deal with drunken/stoned people that I did not know and like!

I don't really drink , ever, so I don't drink during the gamesI play in. Well, I mean, I drink soda but that isn't what you were referring to. (And I drink soda out of a pirate beer mug shaped like a skull so that has to count for something).

But back to your question... The game at my place no one drinks. It's not really a rule, and I doubt we'd object to it, it's just no one does. The game at someone else's house , several of the people drink. In fact I think only 3 of us don't. The other 4 do. But they mostly sip beers and wines. They don't get drunk.

Although gaming while drunk might be amusing for a one shot, I can't see being able to actually play drunk all the time.
