Drinking While Gaming? Warning -- mature content (I hope)

I game with my friends (who I've known since college), and so the goal of our sessions is to socialize as well as game. Since everyone seems to be past their "head in the toilet" phase, the drinking that does go on tends not to be disruptive. The worst that happens is that everyone gets sleepy earlier than they would normally. The Game Cube and PS2 hooked up in the other room have been far more disruptive than any alcohol has ever been.

As to what gets consumed: good beer and top-shelf liquor :)

There is one player in our group who drinks 2-4 beers every session. The other players drink 1-3 beers occasionally. I rarely drink, but only because I've decided that I really don't like to drink anymore. When I was younger a I drank a lot, but I finally "grew out of it."

Recently, I had 2 beers at a game session and had a lot of trouble keeping up with what was going on. Guess my tolerance has gone WAY down! :o

Mrs. Barsoom and I aren't exactly HEAVY drinkers but we do like a little tipple on a regular basis. Most of our games include either a few beers or a couple of vodka cocktails she's become fond of. Our games are in downtown Vancouver and people walk to the game so we have no concern about driving.

A few beers isn't a big deal for any of us and doesn't seem to affect our game play much.

We used to be pretty serious tobacco smokers but quit a couple of years ago. There's still one player in our group who smokes but we play at his house so it's his rules. Doesn't bother me at all.

I would not play after smoking weed -- loss of concentration is a bad thing for gaming, just like the need to concentrate is a bad thing for being stoned. Not a sensible mix. I know folks who take cocaine when they play, but that's not for me. They're more Magic: TG players than D&D players, anyway. And I bet if you're into it, Magic is JUST the thing for a coke high.

This has been one of the things I really appreciate about this hobby and is one of the things that I point out to other people is that this is one recreational social activity that doesn't involve alchohol or drugs.
I'm also not fond of social occasions complete centered on drinking and agree, appreciate the non-alcohol element of D&D.

Among Russian gamers I've come across, however, it seems the game infact is an excuse to drink. Different perspective I suppose.

Alcohol is generally not the beverage of choice at any game I have been in, but if someone brings something, or we have something to toast it will appear.

I do have to anecdotes.
1. Back in college I ran a game and someone made the fairly elaborate (for a gameroom) drinks of white russians. The party imbibbed heavily, and their characters wandered into a maze like room. Five hours later, they were still in the room. I have to believe that they could have escaped earlier with sober heads. I thought it was funny though.

2. Back in grad-school, one of our players it turned out as a bit of a coke fiend. Not to make light of the situation, we didn't realize it until he quit the game (after stealing some money from one of us), but it made sense when we discovered it. He was the most fun interesting and entertaining player when he was high, when he wasn't he was a complete rock, and didn't contribute to the game at all, except for sullen grumpiness. We were all puzzled by the ups and downs of his performance, until we learned the whole story.

The moral? If you are gonna have a coke fiend in the game, (a) make sure he has plenty of coke, (b) don't get too attached to him, (c) hide your valuables.

Beer bottles!? They stack up and only serve to distance us from our dice!! We must PLAAAAY...the game is the thing and to get things happening in-game one must have focus. We take our gaming fun very seriously...:p

You could always use the bottles as terrain. Imagine the terrors that lurk beneath Beerhenge. :uhoh:

That is kind of funny, the majority of the folks I knew who smoked pot were either lawyers or CPAs. :)

We do what we must to survive, my friend.

Legal or not, if it is against company policy you can still get canned if they find out you are using.

Well, sure, but if it's against policy, you can get canned for wearing mismatched socks. (Among other reasons, this is why I only buy black socks.)

BTW, I had an aquaintance back in law school whose sister was a defense attorney. She had quite a few pot-dealer clients, so she occasionally got paid in weed. It was fairly common for her to say something like, "Oh, going to a party? Grab yourself a handful from the freezer." The unspoken agreement was that my friend got all the smoke she wanted, but if the cops ever raided the stash, she'd claim it as her own.

Now that was a pot-smoker. Makes me look like a puritan by comparison. Or, I guess, like a New Gamer.

That's the funniest thing I've heard in weeks.

And inspirational, too. I sense a Raymond Carver-esque story coming on... "Serra Cathedral" or somesuch...

Thanks!
