Drinks to try on my 21st?

If you don't mind the taste of Jaegermeister/Jägermeister (I know it's a foreign/weird taste to most Americans), then you might want to try a Firetruck:
Jägermeister + raspberry soda (I'm not sure you can get any kind of raspberry soda in the US... maybe cranberry can be substituted for it???).
Or an Emergency Response Firetruck:
2 cl. Jägermeister
2 cl. Vodka
raspberry soda

Both drinks are served in long drink glasses. Neither taste as "strongly" as pure Jägermeister (of course), but are actually fairly sweet.

The funny thing is that we have a hard candy here in Denmark that tastes exactly like the Firetruck drink (and the hard candy was on the market long before anyone thought to mix the Firetruck drink).

Water is definitely the most important ingredient to avoiding hangover - hangovers are almost entirely the result of dehydration from the body trying to use alcohol instead of water for coolant and other purposes.

Of course, you could avoid the whole issue by mixing up equal parts Pina Colada Mixer and ginger ale over crushed ice, and just tell people you're having Pina Coladas. That way, you don't have to worry about hangover, you get full appreciation of how foolish everyone else gets when they get buzzed, and if they get REALLY drunk, you'll still have wits enough to loot 'em for their wallet. :] (Just kidding. Mostly. )

Something I know all too well...

I'll admit it, I'm not the greatest when it comes to DM'ing a high level party...but this is a subject I know something about, so I'll chime in...

1. Most of the advice I've read here is pretty good...eat a decent meal, load up on carbs and proteins ( pasta, bread, a steak, etc ) but don't over eat. That will slow down the absorbtion of alcohol into your system. Make sure you have a safe way home ( cab, sober driver, whatever ). If you have the option to nibble on stuff at the bar, do it.

2. The darker the liquor, the better chance of a hangover. Hence, Jaegermeister, Whiskey ( my personal favorite ), and red wine will make you feel much worse than vodka or gin. The excpetion to this rule is Everclear...if you hear that word, RUN AWAY! :D

3. Stick to mixed drinks and shots, beer will just have you running for the rest room every 15 minutes, and who wants to spend their 21st birthday in the rest room all night?

4. Do not order ( or let anyone buy you ) a Cement Mixer or a Hairy Buffalo...those are "joke shots" that are used to get the 'trouble-makers' out of the bar. You won't enjoy either one.

5. Old stand-bys that taste good, and have the ability to make you happy - Jack and Coke, Snakebite ( the shot...trust me, you really will like this ), Alabama Slammer, Long Island Iced Tea ( as long as they make it from ingredients, and don't pour it out of pre-mix ), or Amaretto Sour. My general rule is, don't get it if it has more than three ingredients, and ice is an ingredient.

6. After the party, find any all-night diner ( Denny's, Perkins, etc ) and eat before you go to bed. Once again, carbs and proteins will help minimize the hangover.

7. Do not take acetaminophen ( Tylenol ) before going to bed, or the next morning if you have a headache...or, you too can pay a visit to a liver specialist every six months to assess the damage done, like me. And, before any one asks...yes, I still drink alcohol.

8. IMHO, the best thing to drink before going to bed is Gatorade...rehydrates you, and replaces some of the electrolytes and what not that the alcohol washes out of your brain.

That's about the best advice I can give...be safe, stay out of trouble, and don't drink to the point where you start forgetting things...

Happy Birthday!

Zeph

What is this talk of not combining beer and hard liquor????

I am a firm advocate of Irish Whiskey & Beer.

But, for first timers and girly-drink-drunks, I am a fan of anything involving blenders, ice cream, and LOTS of foliage. LOTS.

... spoke HellHound, from the atop his 22 Con and his Endurance, Diehard and Hold Licquor Within feat chain.

:D

Girly Drink List (All tasty in a sweet, fruity, yummy kind of way, all things that any bartender will be able to make for you. Try 'em all!):
  • Frozen Margarita (if you like sweet, go with Strawberry, if you don't mind tart, go for Lime (the classic))
  • Long Island Iced Tea
  • Daquiri (again with the Strawberry/Lime decision for you to make)
  • Mai Tai
  • Pina Colada
  • Melonball
  • Grasshopper
Do not let anyone talk you into trying a Blue Monday. Blue Curacao is evil and must be stopped.

If you find the sweetness is getting to you, clean out your mouth with a crisp gin and tonic (I prefer Tanqueray's gin, but poofters will try to sell you on Bombay Sapphire).

Oh, and I'm with HellHound, except on the other side of the Irish Sea. Laphroaig's my baby...

Oh, and happy 21st, Your Highness! Have a good one!

Have just realised that the reason this is a big deal is that 21 is probably the legal drinking age, isn't it? That seems awfully old to me, but then I'm Canadian...

It's already been said but let me repeat it. Lots of water. Over the last few hours of my 21st birthday celebration I drank 6 or 7 glasses of water. Didn't get a hangover the next day.

Happy birthday and I hope you have a good time. :-)

When you first start drinking you'll never get hangovers. You'll drink a fifth of whiskey and wake up the next morning, shower, and go to work and wonder what all of those weak sissies were talking about.

After two years or so, though, it'll catch up with you.

There's nothing wrong with drinking. However, in all but the sparest of circumstances, there is something wrong with 1) habitual drinking and 2) getting sh*t-faced drunk.

Hm, I don't drink at all, so I can't help you out much here. Just don't drink if it's only for the sake of drinking. That would be unwise.

As curiosity demands, I must ask. When did you and the husband get married?
27 December 2003. :) (I'm the husband - but I'm a couple years older. She was 19, I was 22 when we got hitched)
