Drinks to try on my 21st?

27 December 2003. (I'm the husband - but I'm a couple years older. She was 19, I was 22 when we got hitched)

Indeed! I was almost 20 (13 days shy) when we tied the knot (18 when we got engaged). We just celebrated out 1 year weddin' anniversary!

What they said, with a couple of caveats from an old broad:

GO SLOW. It really is not fun to throw up, black out or wake up with bruises whose origins you don't remember. Drink to enjoy the drink, not to get blotto as fast as possible. You're a grownup now; that's how grownups drink.

If somebody suggests a drink and you have to ask "What's that?", DON'T DRINK IT. Extra points for avoiding drinks with stupid names like Sex on the Beach. You can look up basic drinks on the Web and decide what sounds good or not so good.

Oh, and it goes without saying: don't leave your drink unattended. The old highwayman's trick of drugging a stranger's drink, waiting until he goes off to relieve himself, and then robbing him blind has made a comeback, only now they use Rohypnol or GHB. If you go to the ladies' room with half a drink left behind, get a new one.

I am not one to drink excessively. This is certainly not my first time drinking - as a young married woman, nearly all my friends are over 21. As such, gatherings of friends have booze. So I spend many of my evenings at their houses, enjoying wine or whatever happens to be the drink of choice for the evening.

I did my share of ridiculous drinking back in high school... and, don't plan to EVER do it again. I am full aware of how to take care of myself in a bar situation. I just lack a large amount of knowledge of actual drinks.

Well - I went out at midnight and had a most delicious Cosmopolitan (hey, I know it's ridiculous, but I reserve the right to *love* all things pink ) and a Kamikaze...

In about an hour and a half I will be indulging in the fabulous combination of drinks and video games at Dave and Busters: Happy Birthday To Me!
