Drow Adventure Resource Recommendations

The M'hael

First Post
Inspired by Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes and Out of The Abyss, I am interested in starting a campaign based in and around Menzoberranzan with drow PC's. I own Out of The Abyss and have run the first half of it, but was wondering what resource recommendations you all had for me to draw from, especially on the lower level end. (I am thinking of starting characters at level 3 at least though, maybe 5) I haven't read any of the Drizzt books, so a recommendation of which of those would be most helpful to read would be a good start.

Thanks!

Val

(I could go into more about the specifics I have in mind so far but I think that would best belong in a separate thread)

I would suggest the (in chronological order) first book in the series Homeland, for sure. Some of the other books return to the city as well, but it's the first one that really paints a clear picture of drow society.

If you want to read about Menzoberranzan in novel form, the best start would probably be Homeland, the first Drizzt novel (chronologically, it was the fourth in publishing order).

As for other info, I'm surprised that the 2e Menzoberranzan boxed set doesn't appear to be available on the DM's Guild, but Drow of the Underdark is, which just about as useful, especially for describing drow society as a whole. Again, it's 2e, but the general information will still be handy, and any edition-specific stuff should be pretty easily translatable. And since drow are long-lived (except when murdering each other), the time skip to 5e won't be so unreasonable (just note what changes you see in OotA). There's apparently a 4e Menzoberranzan setting book, but I am unfortunately unfamiliar with it...

Also available on the DMs Guild is City of the Spider Queen and while it's a campaign, it has a great deal of good setting info.

While I do have 4E's Demon Queen Enclave I can't really speak to its quality, as it is even harder to get anyone to play 4E than it is to get them to play a Drow campaign. BUT it is available on DM's Guild.

Yep, there's a 2e and a 3.5e version of Drow of the Underdark. The 2e one is okay. The 3.5 one is really good. Also, some information here:

If you're able to obtain a copy of the Menzoberranzan boxed set on eBay without breaking the bank, I highly recommend it.

Surface raids and old temples/tombs underground are just reflavored modules from 'normal' play. Most of the drow stuff comes with politics and intrigue of the culture and killing your sister before she sacrifices you. That and knowing how to pronounce drow. I always say drow like brow, and not drow like row.
