Drow of the Underdark information

Fighter: Give up heavy armor/shields for +2 Initiative and adding Dex to wpn dmg vs. flat footed foes up to 30 ft away.

Wow, there's a no-brainer alternate class feature. It's a good thing they limited it to drow, or every multiclass fighter/rogue, fighter/scout, fighter/ranger, fighter/monk, fighter/swashbuckler, etc. would have it.

I know I want it for my non-drow character.

Yes, it is a no-brainer. Heavy armor is pretty useless is you have good dex anyway. Since most drow have a good dex, every drow fighter would have this.

I wonder if the section on Erelhei Cinlu takes into account Fred Weining's excellent Dragon article, or if its just an independent expansion of the original D-series module.

Hmm, I'd been hoping for some fluff, at least, about gods other than Lolth,

It's unfortunate that the book only focuses on Lolth, rather than including material on the larger drow pantheon (because while FR has used some of them a lot, they're not FR specific). I'd have loved some material on Kiaransalee.

To me, Lolth is a demon queen, and the drow are her subjects. There is no "pantheon." In my (admittedly dated and non-FR colored) view of the drow, any other religious practices are strictly heretic and underground.

Demonbinder--Warlock-based class. Allows you to transform yourself into demonic hybrids for some nice additonal bonuses. (You power them with damnation points, of which you receive a number equal to your Cha bonus plus your class level, and each transformation lasts 10 rounds). For eight points, for example, you can take on marilith form, which gives you two extra arms, 40 bonus hp, and the ability to spend another point as a swift action to fire an eldritch blast at a -5 penalty.

The very first drow in the D&D game (in Greyhawk!) didn't worship Lolth.

I understand classed drow, it's a book on drow after all, but there was no need for classed bugbears, goblins, and trolls. Again, I like NEW monsters, no rehashes of MMI creatures with class levels.

Considering that there are already a few thousand monsters in the 3rd edition bestiary, and that developing classed NPCs is oft cited as one of the great difficulties of running 3rd edition, I would guess that WotC is doing such things to market their products to the vast majority of gamers who aren't you and/or don't share your preferences.

You and the Jester would both do well, I think, to remember that nobody is designing books for you -- they are designing books for most people.

I don't remember ever hearing anyone that plays or DMs D&D to want classed NPCs, but they gave it to us thinking we would like it.

It's not just classed monsters that bug me, I sincerely don't like pointless filler. Considering the classed monsters are as laden with errors as NPC statistics, I really don't see the point.

I am hoping the DI content WotC has planned will give me enough material to more than make up for the LACK of material in the books recently... :\
