D&D 5E Druid Dino-racing

First Post
So, a few weeks ago, we started ToA, and, before heading out, we had the bright idea of cheating a Dino race to gain more funds. Pretty much sure this would happen anyways, the ranger (roder) had my food obsessed lizardfplk barbarian place all the bets, and he had the Druid wild shape into a deinonychus the next morning. We put a sizable chunk of cash on them coming last, cause we were pretty confident that would happen anyway. In addition to Scarback having caught the rare Wheaton Dino Flue the night before the race, that didn't work because DM had it set up that Ranger would have to make Deception checks instead of Animal Hsndling. His CHA is 8. Once thru got caught, much to the confusion of my barbarian in the stands, they actually started to try to win, and learned, they when they did that, they had advantage on animal handling. 1st with banana candy close behind. Didn't get the purse cause it was pretty obvious they were cheating, but they now know how to more easily cheat the race.

DM ruled animal handling adv because she wasn't expecting it. I think a more reasonable system would be have Druid make athletic checks, but what you think.
