can a druid wildshape into advanced forms of animals? say, can a 18th-level druid wildshape into a 18 HD brown bear, or only the standard brown bear in the MM?

Unfortunately its only the standard forms but as you keep your own BAB and base saves it doesn't really make that big of a difference.

Allowing the advanced forms also opens the annoying can of worms of which additional skill points and feats the advanced forms will have precisely, as they are not necessarily defined in the MM.

If I were DM, I would consider allowing advanced forms if the Druid were to trim his list down based on some coherent theme.
