Druids..

In 3.0, druids can't use prohibited weapons, or they lose their powers. In 3.5, it only says they lose their powers for wearing prohibited armor and shields. Is this an error? Thanks.

Thank goodness. I hated the 3.0 "if your Druid throws a rock, he loses all his powers" rule. Not to mention the guys that noted that an animal's natural weapons weren't on the Druid's weapon list...

Actually, except for people complaining about bows and the like, I don't know of many Druids who would burn a precious feat to pick up Greatsword Proficiency...Quarterstaves and the like will do you until you hit level 6...

One build I like is the dwarven druid. The extra con gives you extra hps, even when wildshaped. It also allows you to take one level of fighter to pick up weapon and armor proficiencies. Use a some craft skill to make yourself some wooden full plate armor, add an ironwood spell at higher levels (and a cleric's magic vestment) and then you're cooking in dwarven form as well as animal form.

Why does your ability in dwarven form matter at high level? Because some adventures don't take place in huge dungeons. Sometimes you're stuck in a small passage that won't let you turn into dire bear form. Sometimes you'll find a weapon that is better than your available animal form natural attacks. Sometimes you run out of wildshapes in a day. Sometimes you'll want to avoid melee combat (against a small army of shadows, for instance). And sometimes, even supernatural abilities like wildshape can be blocked.

When should you grab the level of fighter? I'd say as your second level. It hurts a bit to have spells and special abilities delayed a bit, but being able to use polearms and good missile weapons from the back of the party until you get to wildshaping will help keep you productive ... and alive. Plus, if you're in the back, you'll be free to heal front line fighters without provoking AoOs. Even a dwarven druid's concentration bonus is not big enough to consistent cast conservatively at low levels.

Con mod does change HP when you Wild Shape, according to the Sage. Dunno if it's particularly good or not, but according to him, it does.

If I were to take a level of a martial class, it would still be monk, though. Use a quarterstaff and always get Wis-to-Ac, as well as an increased IUS damage and two good feats that I would take anyway as a Druid (IUS, Improved Grapple).
