I was comparing Duelward (Complete Arcane/Spell Compendium) and Battlemagic Perception (Heroes of Battle). Those spells are similar to each other.
While Duelward is Wiz/Sor 5th level spell and Battlemagic Perception is Wiz/Sor 3rd level spell, the latter seems to be simply better than the former.
Duelward
Duration:1 round/level or until discharged (D)
You also gain a +4 competence bonus on Spellcraft checks made to identify spells being cast.
Counterspell ... immediate action. Duelward is discharged.
Battlemagic Perception
Duration:10 min./level (D)
You gain a +5 competence bonus on Spellcraft checks made to identify a spell as it is being cast.
+If you have at least 5 ranks in Spellcraft, you are also able to sense the use of any spell or spell-like ability within 100 feet, so long as you have line of effect to the caster.
Counterspell ... free action. Spell ends immediately. The battlemagic perception spell ends immediately.
Is this just one of cases which the one created later is better than the old one? Or am I missing something?
