An alternate explanation...

As a hopefully better eplanation for this critter, as opposed to the one that has sparked so much discussion...

A laboratory creation? Some pesky wizard experimenting on some blood from the creature collected while everyone in the country is trying to kill the thing.

Give some lowly goblin a blood transusion and see what happens?

This is how I might use the creature...I've not seen the actual template though.

According to the text the wizards do it the old-fashioned way. It even said the most arrogant and powerful wizards like to keep a few Tarrasque "concubines" on hand to show their superiority. Shudder

And whatever happened to that thing being unique? Apparently once you get powerful enough you can find one in every brothel...
