Well, I haven't read them. Of course I haven't yet got around to finishing the F. Herbert books. I think I got up to Children of Dune. I've been meaning to get to them but I have a long list of books I want to read. Thanks for the link though. When I get a chance I'll have to read it.

Don't try to like them. Just read them to see what happens.

I don't think the new books are as though provoking or as interesting as some of the older ones, however, I like getting alot of the historical background info. I think the lack of that info was one of the problems with the older ones, especially when a few thousand years passed between books.

Don't let that stop you if you have any interest in the newer ones, I've only read up through CoD myself (if it is the third books as I think).

the new books suck.

house harkonnen was frankly disgusting in parts and i got the disconcerting feeling that the authors were getting off on it.

besides, they portray the Holy Bene Tleilax as being evil. Ridiculous!

i am a dune purist.

the original novels by frank herbert are golden in my eyes.

the drek that his son has vomited up under the guise of writing is horrible and makes me never want to reproduce. i just cannot bear the thought of my own child fouling my name and works once i have passed from this world.

Didn't they name the Old Duke, Letos father, something different than what was established? I love the Dune novels, read all of the old ones, but my friend read House Atriedes and said it sucked.

To the guys that haven't finished the old series:
I don't really recommend books 5 or 6, but I really liked 4. You should definitely try to read that far, just to know how the children turn out. ;)

As for the new ones:
I think of them as being an alternate universe fanfic. In that context, I like them just fine. They don't capture the feel of the original universe, and I don't think they'd serve as good canon, but taken strictly as a "what if," they're pretty fun.

(I liked Duncan Idaho's finishing school, in particular.)
