The EN World kitten
The latest Dungeon arrived in my mailbox today. Before I get into the details of the issue, I wanted to make sure to plut the four-panel poster map of The Sea Wyvern, the ship the PCs use in this month's Savage Tide adventure, that came with the magazine.
Editorial: Thanks for the monsters, Dad!, by James Jacobs - James recounts how his father introduced him to his love of monsters. He also bids a fond farewell to Monte Cook, for whom this is the last month doing Dungeoncraft. Future Dungeoncraft articles will be written by Wolfgang Baur.
Prison Mail - Letters this month touch on a variety of issues, such as the desire for an online Dungeon issue index, dislike for the update of "The Mud Sorcerer's Tomb" for how it negates the PCs' higher-level abilities, and a desire for more epic-level adventures.
The Sea Wyvern's Wake, by Richard Pett - The Savage Tide continues! In this adventure for 5th-level characters, the heroes leave Sasserine behind as they set out for the Isle of Dread! However, they first have to survive the journey, which involves run-ins with the Scarlet Brotherhood, saboteurs, and a huge sargasso; at the center of which resides the Mother of All - not to mention a pit stop at the Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan (which is exactly what a certain Demon Lord wants)! Appendices introduce two new monsters: the masher, and the mother of all. It also has a new magic item, the pickled mephit. Sidebars cover if the PCs previously switched sides, the passengers of The Sea Wyvern, the plans of the rival demon lord with the PCs and the Hidden Shrine, scaling the adventure, and affiliation awards.
Swords of the Dragonlake, by Nicolas Logue - In this mystery adventure for 12th-level characters, the PCs explore a mysterious disappearance, and get embroiled in the theatrical circles of the city of Talantier, where nothing is as it seems. Can they untangle the webs of lies and deceit in time to figure out the real threat? Or are they all pawns in a greater production? Sidebars cover the city of Talantier, recap the feats Disguise Spell and Ironskin Chant, the Flick of the Wrist feat, moving things along, and how to time the adventure (since it's open-ended).
Vlindarian's Vault, by Johnathan M. Richards - In this adventure for 18th-level characters, the PCs are asked by a man named Glistern to rescue his captured paramour from Vlindarian's Vault, where goods of all nature can be stored for a hefty price. But breaking into the Vault proves to be no mean feat, especially when it's located on the Elemental Plane of Fire, and its owner resides within! And what, exactly, is Glistern not telling the PCs? A sidebar covers scaling the adventure.
Dungeoncraft: It's Just You and Them (And the Rules), by Monte Cook - In his last Dungeoncraft column, Monte reiterates the importance of how the GM is the sole link between the players and the game world, and how important that aspect of the game is.
The Cast: Slum Dwellers, by Phillip Larwood - This article gives very abbreviated stats (name, alignment, gender, race, class levels) and discussion of four characters you'd find in the worst parts of a town.
Wandering Monster: Living Shipwreck, by Richard Pett - Wandering Monster is a new recurring article debuting this month. Sometimes it'll have brand new monsters, and other times it'll be updating monsters from previous editions of the game (James discusses it in his editorial). This month, we have the living shipwreck, a CR 18 colossal magical beast that, while not used in this month's Savage Tide adventure, is perfect for it.
Cartoons - The Portent, by Peter Bergting; Mt. Zogon, by Tony Moseley; and Downer, by Kyle Stanley Hunter.
Map of Mystery: The Drakebourn Sanctum, by Christopher West - This month's Map of Mystery has an upper and a lower level.
