All your Dungeon prices are based on the newstand price. Subscription price (for the old version according to what's on the website right now) is 47% of newstand. Longer subscriptions give even better pricing.

47% of the new newstand price is $3.28 (that's American for our foreign friends. :))

If we assume the page breakdowns you had above (50 out of 67 and 20 out of 33), plus the 16 bonus pages, we get 86 pages for $6.56 = 7.6c per page.

A subscription continues to blow the doors off all other options.

In fact, a subcription beats buying the 2/3 Dungeon mags at the rack, since you pay less than half price per issue, and you get the 1/3 Dungeon and the bonus coverage as well.

So, like I said, it's still a good deal even if you don't like Poly.

All that said, I am also wondering how it will play out. These kinds of changes show a magazine of the edge of survivability. Hopefully it'll come back from the brink.

PS

For those who subscribe it is a better deal. I made a personal choice awhile back that I would continue to pay more than I had to (Retail that is) in order to support my FLGS. While I am paying more it is going to something I support, which is a locally owned and operated establishment. If I were truely after the best prices I would subscribe to both Dungeon and Dragon as well as purchase PDFs and Books at large discounts online. In doing what I do I am getting something of value for the extra money I spend, and that is having a friendly location to browse through a wide variety of products before buying and also having a place where gamers can meet. The value of LGS is another topic however and can be argued elsewhere. The prices I compared are retail and what I spend for the products I buy. If you want to compare non-retrail prices that is another matter and for which online discounting for the other products would also have to be looked into.

That's just the same 3 yr rate applied to the new newstand price. I did mention that longer deals were better, didn't I?

PS

but that was before the announced change. i would have preferred 24 issues instead of the proposed 20.

actually i would've preferred they honored the deal as written. 3 years. which in my book would mean 36 issues.

of course, the fine print also says the price can change at any time without notification. but by subscribing i am locking in my rate.

edit: on top of my old subscription.

Only if you're in America.
Elsewhere, subscriptions cost a lot more and arrive several months later than the newstand issues.

The answer to your first question is "correct."

But the only RPG I have played in the past three+ years is D&D 3E. I own CoC D20, and I would really like to play it. I own Spycraft and would really like to play it. I own D20 Modern and would really like to play it. I think I am even going to get a D20 modern side game going soon. But half my group just really wants to play D&D. I certainly don't mind playing D&D, I want to play that as much as any of the other games. So that is what we play.

My hope is that I can get them hooked on the d20 modern campaign and eventually start playing that more than once every 5 sessions. From there, perhaps I can get them to spread out even more. But I am getting way ahead of myself.

Quite simply, I have a good group and a really good D&D game going. As much as I want some variety for myself, I am completely happy to move slowly on the front to maintain the good thing I already have.
Well, if your group don't mind, you can search for other groups to play other games, including d20 games. Or tell your current group you want to take a break and try something different, like MECHA CRUSADE d20 Modern mini-game for one night, or Genetech. Just one night ... it can't kill them.

Games are expensive. Either you can afford it or you can't. If you can't, then you're not even a part of the market. If you can and chose not to because of content quality, then others may step up and fill the void. Currently magazines, especially gaming (rpg) are not coming out in droves. Money does talk but make sure you know what message you're sending.

The publishers are making a financial decision to make more money on the magazine. It will be interesting to see how people really "vote" with their wallets. Fortunately, I have a few issues left in my subscription that will serve nicely as a trial period. Good luck Paizo - I wish you continued success.

Dungeon 96: $8 for 71/89 pages of adventures (Excluding letters and ads) = 11.25c per page
Dungeon 95: $8 for 69/99 pages of adventures (Excluding letters and ads) = 11.6c per page
Sunless Citadel: $10 for 32 pages (No ads) = 31.25c per page
Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil: $30 for 207 pages (+2 pages of ads) = 14.5c per page

Look on your player's faces when they are eaten by a blue dragon: Priceless...

Sorry, couldn't resist.:D

Well, I am not going to scream and yell or anything, I wish you the best of luck.

But here is why I don't like it:

Dungeon was a very nice $6 D&D mag. Then they added in Poly "for free". Ok, whatever.

Then they switch publishers and go, hey, we cant cover this at this price, and bump up the price by 33%.

When did the price go up? I've always been paying £3.50 for Dungeon admittedly I'm about a month behind the US with the time it takes to ship here. What with the exchange rate, thats less than $6 an issue even with the fact there must be an additional shipping charge included in the cost somewhere.

When I say always, I mean I've been paying £3.50 since Dungeon supported 3rd Edition and paid that for the copy I picked up yesterday.
