Dwarf height in D&D

The 1e DMG has an NPC male dwarf as 48 +1d6 or -1d4 inches or 44-54 inches (3'8" - 4'6"). 13 Human males, surprisingly, average 6 feet tall. Seems a bit high, doesn't it? And varies + or - 1d12 inches.

Being taller than 4'6" is like being taller than 7' (or 6'9"-6'10" if you give the human male a more realistic average height of 5'9"-5'10"). Obviously, you can set average height and variability however you want. But a Dwarf above 5' is like a near-eight-foot human. That's almost unheard of.

PCs are special, and there is no mechanical difference within Medium. I'd allow it.

This could solve your problem while giving you a special weapon to stomp goblins with.

Well those are certainly more stylish than the average dwarf....
