If you want defense in 3.0, you just can't go wrong with the tower shield.

I've had better luck with a level of wizard and shield scrolls.

Let's you use a normal shield and still wield a weapon.

Isn't it better to use wands? Or maybe potions? With scrolls, you still need to roll for arcane spell failure. And if you try to use a scroll of stilled Shield spell, the minimum caster level is 3 and you must make a caster level check.

Ring of Spell Storing or Ioun Stone may work, too.

The Dwarven Thrower wins major points on coolness for a Dwarven Defender. However the Thrower's major weakness is that it doesn't return until the next round.

The fact that you only get one attack a round with it kind of sucks compared to the archer who is shooting five or six arrows a round.

Also, you won't get an AOO's with your Dwarven Thrower for the round after throwing it (but you could always do a shield bash for your AOO).

I reccomend the dwarven thrower warhammer -- when in the defensive stance, you can still throw it and it's a perfectly functional melee weapon too :D

How about quickdraw and a few Dwarven thrower?

Not according to the FAQ, and the campaign I pull this trick in (Living Greyhawk) uses the FAQ as cannon.

Fortunately this bit of cheese is changing in 3.5.

*sigh* I'd really love to get Brok's hands on a dwarven thrower or maybe a converted hammer of thunderbolts  but for giant bashing purposes, I'll probably take a glaive along. At 5th I will take a level of ranger to get some more skill points to max Spot and Listen and for a nice +1 (in 3.5 a +2) bonus against giants.

Can't wait to play again this weekend. :)

A DM can have a lot of fun with several dwarven throwers flying back at your dwarf... :D

:D You bet!

But is it legit? Assuming no DM interference ;), could a dwarf (a rich one to posses so many dwarven throwers but bear with me) use 4 of those to be able to throw 2/round?

Any weapon of returning in fact. Cool visual and I can't see why it couldnt' be done.
