Dwarven Rage! What do you love about dwarves?

Because they think wizards are best used for decorating the sharp edges of their axes.

whehehe! good one

We had a dwarven paladin in the party who even with the hard drinking feat was addicted to alcohol. It took some fine roleplaying to portrait his inner battle between destroying evil and urge to drink himself hammered!

What are the core values/traits of dwarves in your campaign, and what do you do that's different? Dwarves are often the worsts of stereotypes in RPG settings -- so why do they ROCK so much?

Core values:
Clan, honour, killing greenskins with sharp things, beer

Differences:
Chaotic Kord worshippers, wizards, gunpowder (although this was invented/reverse engineered by gnome PC and given to dwarves to stop them killing themselves while trying to discover it themselves). This also only applies to the local dwarven clan in the current region. Other dwarf clans are likely to be more traditional (lawful, no wizards or firearms).

I was always a bit partial to the WFRP Trollslayer stereotype. Deathwishing beserkers who kick ass. No beard, no clan (any more!), lots of tatoos and very angry. Had some fun and it fits with the DnD barbarian class very well, IMO.

I'm also a big fan of the secretive angle of Dwarves. Not to mention their unshakable certainty that 'they could have built it better'.

And the best friend who is normally a quiet but lethal elven archer?

Yay for fun stereotypes!

What I love about dwarves? I love how they scream when you kill them

Really, they embody a lot of stuff I don't like: Burly (instead of graceful), gruffy (instead of charismatic) and, above all else, lawful little buggers.

I'd play one, but I don't think for very long. My uncharismatic and only moderately intelligent human is level 4 and already I tire of him.

I have not laughed so hard from reading a book as I did when I read the exploits of this individual and his 'Gutbuster Brigade'.

During my days in EQ I was a member of an all Dwarven RP guild called the Grudgebearers. They combined my love of the Dwarven race, roleplaying and computer games all into 2 years of some of the most fun I have ever had. My most memorable moment was when we staged an attack on the Dark Elf city of Neriak. The look on the Dark Elf players faces must have been priceless  as they saw a horde of battle-cry chanting, axe swinging, blood-thirsty Dwarves arrayed for battle and charging through their home.

EDIT: I forgot to add what it is that I like about the stumpy, hairy ones.

Their stoicism and enduring loyalty to those they call friends. Their ability to stand toe to toe with an ememy and fight to the last breath and not regret death but also the reverse in their love of life, food and their heritage. Most other races see Dwarves as being taciturn, dour and xenophobic. While some of these traits are true they are just as quickly turned aside once their respect and friendship is earned.

Agreed 100%. Thibbledorf Pwent is easily one of Salvatore's coolest characters. My favorite R.A. Salvatore characters, though, are Ivan and Pikel Bouldershoulder.

I must admit I appreciate dwarves more than elves. It always seems odd to me, though, that dwarves haven't discovered things like gun-powder. They always seemed quite technically minded to me.

Oh, they have, they have. But it's just so dwamed unreliable. Especially with magic users around. Spark is a cantrip, you know.

It's used mainly for blasting and mining when noone is around. It's one of the reasons dwarves are so much better at mining than other peoples.

And they tell noone. You don't want to anger the blasters guild.

I can't quite tell if you're all joking, but I think this is a great idea. One whole adventure in it at least :)

I love dwarves- always have. They stand for a lot of positive qualities: honor, strong tradition and clan ties, industriousness, discipline, toughness, burliness, honesty, carefulness, and wisdom.

Plus heavy armor, axes, hammers, beards, runic magic, and their names just kick serious butt- like Woldemar Ingarwulf. (No pantywaiste stupid elf names, like Theladorien Moonshadow).

Actually, elves stand for just about everything I loathe in real life (undisciplined, impulsiveness, lazy, histrionic, overly emotional, flaky-artistic, and flouncy- they are like hippies who became yuppies), so the race that is the antithesis of elves HAS to be worthwhile in my book. ;)
