Dwarven Weapon Training--ALL axes??

Does Dwarven Weapon Training give proficiency with ALL axes and hammers, including superior weapons like execution axe, mordenkrad ... and even the axe end of the ugrosh?

Likewise would Eladrin Soldier give proficiency with the greatspear?

The text of the feats suggests that all weapons of the type would be included. But it almost seems too good . . .

Yes, it provides access to all weapons including superior weapons. There is an ask wizards to confirm this.

No, it is not too good. The two classes in question do not have str as a bonus stat and so the feats are meant to make them competitive with classes that do.

Swordmages use Intelligence, so Eladrin Swordmage can double dip into the proficiency and damage bonus, while getting a racial bonus to that stat.

We also don't know what the future holds. The Avenger could easily be using Wisdom for melee attacks, which would let dwarves gain the benefit of the feat and the stat bonus.

Any design element that relies on the current lack of an option for balance is flawed. That option may very easily become available in the future.

Personally I wouldn't. I'd allow it to give proficiency with the PHB axes and hammers.

Mind you, I wouldn't allow any of the weapons from AV anyway, as they seem nothing more than gross powerups (e.g. look at almost any suggested 'build' since they came out and it features one of those super-weapons).

JMO.

Cheers

Swordmages use swords though, right? And they do not get proficiency with all heavy blades or light blades, their proficiency is with all spears from the feat. And while their feat gives them a damage bonus with swords, I do not see how they gain any proficiency bonus.

Although the +2 damage bonus might be unbalanced (or not; I don't know), the access to all hammers and axes is not. You can only use one weapon at a time* and thus it makes no difference mechanically if you take a superior weapon feat or a weapon group feat. Either way, you end up wielding a superior weapon and dealing +1 damage.

*yeah, yeah, sometimes you use two weapons, but for dual-wielding to make DWT better than a superior weapon feat, you would have to wield two different superior weapons simultaneously, and the only way for that to work is to wield a Craghammer and Waraxe together. I don't know if that's even possible, but they're mechanically identical, so it doesn't matter.

A dwarf with this feat doesn't do more or even as much damage over time as a Strength race with superior Weapon Proficiency. (Think of it like power attack. The more the base damage of the weapon is, the less you want to take a -1 to hit for +1 damage. Dwarf + DWT compared to Str Race + WP is the exact same comparison. The 'broken' higher damage weapons that DWT allow actually make Dwarf + DWT a suboptimal choice compared to Str Race + WP)

Dare I say, the weapons in AV were probably made with Dwarves and Eladrin in mind, so that their Weapon Training feats actually mattered. I'm willing to bet money that they even went out of their way to -make- superior weapons just so that Dorfs and Ellies can get real bang out of that feat.
