Eagle's Splendor and Turning

Shadeus

First Post
Joe the 3rd-level cleric has a 14 Cha, which means he had 5 turn attempts (3 + Cha mod). Now Joe is about to go into a graveyard to face a bunch of undead. He can see them walking around so he decides to cast eagle's splendor on himself boosting his Cha to 18 and giving him bonuses on his turning roll and damage. This also gives him two more turn attempts!

The battle is over and Joe survived. He used one turn attempt during the encounter and destroyed all the skeletons. His eagle's splendor spell is now worn off. How many turn attempts does Joe have left?

a. 5. Eagle's splendor gave him two "bonus" turn attempts and they were removed from those temporary turning attempts
b. 4 When you turn, you remove the number of times turned off your current maximum.
c. Something else.

As a follow-up question, what if Joe was extra zealous while in the graveyard and used all seven turn attempts, his total would be -2 at the end of the day. Or another twist, what if Joe had no turn attempts left and then cast's eagle's splendor, does that give him two more turn attempts? Are there any consequences to having a turned more times than you can usually turn due to a spell?

He has 5 to begin with, casts the spell and gains two more, uses 1 and then the spell goes away. He has 4 remaining. (same reason as the hp change from a barb and his rage ability)

If he used 7 instead then he has used 7 today. If he goes down to where he would normally only be able to use 5 nothing special happens, if his stat goes up again he has already used 7 so he will have to get it high enough to have more than that available.

That is how I have always seen it played and played it, I think it makes the most sense for everything that goes on. ;)

very true ;) at least that moves the number of uses for that spell from zero up to one. (a bit of an exageration, but not by much)

Do not overthink it.

He has a 14 Cha now. He has used 1 turning attempt. He has 4 turning attempts left for today.

To do otherwise creates a whole class of messy "temporary" resource issues that will make all the animal buffs painfully confusing. If I gain temporary turning attempts, why can I not keep casting Eagle's Splendor and gain them over and over again? And should we change how Bear's Endurance works? Do not go there.

You know, that's a helluva good point. I didn't think about Bear's Endurance.

What, there isn't much occasion to get a +2 bonus to Bluff or Diplomacy rolls for 3 minutes? ;)

The only other use I can see is for low level sorcerers or bards who don't have a cloak of charisma yet to boost their spell DCs.

The reason why I'm asking is because I have an 8th-level paladin in a low-magic campaign who doesn't have access to Charisma boosting items. I was wondering if eagle's splendor is a good way to boost my turn attempts per day (for uses of divine might, of course).

'hold on! we cant talk yet until I make myself pretty'

nah, its duration is just too low for any real social situation, gather information takes hours even ;)

as a paladin it will boost your saves and give you extra divine might use, so it is a good combat buff. For anyone else though? Even the sorc is probably better off spending that round putting something else up, if they are high enough level to not worry about a 2nd level spell too much but low enough that they dont have other better options that is a very odd level indeed! possible though I suppose, but I wouldnt want to burn a valuable slot on it.

Yes, but not reliably, due to the short duration of the spell. Still, if you get 5 turn attempts per day, and have already blown 'em all, it does make Eagle's Splendor a good buff for you.

(And, I'd forgotten about the beneficial impact to your Divine Grace class ability, which scion just referred to. +2 on all saves is nothing to sneeze at, when you're heading into a fight.)

+16 hp worth of Lay On Hands is pretty nice as well.
