Easy one, I promise

Actually, no.

I don't have the link handy, but Sean K. Reynolds (I think it was him) had an article that actually discussed the mathematics involved. The ability to stack keen and Imp. Crit was not only not unbalancing, it was the only thing that allowed the low-damage/high-range weapons like the rapier to compete with big weapons like the greatsword in terms of average damage over the course of a campaign.

The question then asked would be why should a weapon like the rapier complete with a weapon like a greatsword? :)

Case by case, it probably shouldn't.

But over the life of a campaign, I'd suggest that they should be, if not completely on par, then at least in the same ballpark. :)

Because they're both Martial weapons.

And, actually, the more appropriate comparison is Rapier to Longsword.

If all the weapons are supposed to have the same effectiveness why not just make them the same. All martial weapons do X, all simple weapons do X etc.?

I agree with you that all martial weapons shouldn't be identical. But making them all roughly comperable isn't necessarily a bad idea.

And I think rapiers are given a bum rap in most gaming and fiction anyway. Those suckers are deadly.

Actually, I'd like it if all martial weapons were identical. This alows fighters to pick up any weapon and go, rather than specializing themselves into a single weapon. I like the idea because as a GM I can sunder the crap out of my fighters weapons and they don't go all cry baby on me because without their one special weapon they're incompetent. It also alows players to build "sub-optimal" concepts that are suddenly optimal.

even if they could do that the game still has the problem of that one single weapon of huge magical ability. So, even if the fighter can use all the weapons equally, he will favor the pick +5 he has and whine when it breaks becasue hhe only has a sword +2 as back up

Yeah, but the problem is greatly compounded by all the feats that are single weapon specific.
