So, you like paladins?

Do you see LG-only paladins as iconic, special, or a valuable feature of D&D?

Or do you think paladins are just holy warriors, and there should be one per alignment or one per god?

The LG Sir Galahad-style paladin is a great concept, but it doesn't really work as a PC in a traditional D&D game, in a party that has neutral or evil aligned members, and that's supposed to be motivated by acquiring treasure and magic items. I'm not sure if non-LG paladins are any better though. They're all fanatics for a cause, and fanatics don't play well with others.

I think paladin works best as an NPC class. They're out there in the world, and can serve as antagonists or temporary allies to the PCs.

That said, I think the LG paladin PC can work in a Dragonlance-style game, where the PCs are not motivated by gold and are mostly good aligned.

I dislike alignment, and particularly don't want mechanically-relevant alignment, so I much prefer Paladins simply being dedicated Divine warriors (and every god, of every alignment, can have them), as opposed to being purely LG.

4E did Paladins right.

I agree on your alignment vs. paladins argument. Haven't played them in 4E.

I love the idea that any god can have paladins, I thought this was one of the great innovations of 4E but after I while I forget which edition spawned what lol. After all its about more choices you can still play your hard core strict LG Pally or play something completely diff like a paladin of neutral god of merchants if thats your cup of tea.

I think paladins should be only LG. I also think deities of every other alignment, except unaligned, should get a customized holy warrior type. Arcana Unearthed had warriors like this, and I thought it was a good compromise.

Thaumaturge.

Why do people have such a hard time with a LG paladin? No one seems to have those issues with a "true Neutral" aligned druid.

Is it just a mark of our cynical, secularized world that we don't believe in true goodness anymore?

I don't think Paladin's should be restricted to any specific alignment. I'm good with them just holding to a creed. But then again, I don't use the 9 Alignments in my games.

From a gameplay perspective, I think it's overly restricting to limit player options. But in the end, having such a restriction is meaningless anyways. In groups where they don't use alignmens, or don't want to adhere to this restriction, they'll simply ignore it and play on.

B-)
