The Great Druid Oalian? For a 1st level Comprehend Languages spell? That's like calling Steve Jobs because you can't install a printer on your iMac.
He doesn't have the spell, he's a druid. They were originally going to greenholt to get some tracks identified, When they went and talked to oalian, the topic came up and he knew the language.

My players are fairly new, and don't know there is a spell called Comprehend language.

This is something that piqued my curiosity. Are any of their PCs spellcasters? If so, they should know about the existence of the spell, whether their players do or not. Sounds like reverse-metagaming :D

Yeah, but I forgot about the spell as well, And he didn't show up this session.

Alright, so this session they got the letter translated. This is it (This is a letter from the order of the emerald Claw. It is addressed to somebody named Dumos. That must be the barghest you fought. Hmm, it says here they where planning on spreading ghoul fever. How many ghouls were there? Unusual. That town must have put up more resistance than was expected. Hmmm, It’s from somebody named Sarbenos. All I can tell you about him is that he is based somewhere in the shadow marches.) After that, they returned to the Village that was slaughtered by the ghouls, where they were Attacked by a Shadow Mastiff.

Try this if you really wish to send them there....

A weapon / item possessed by a critter looking to retrun home. Low enough level to still control the PC but weak enough he may break free on an occation. Have plenty of encounters to build up XP before reaching the Wastelands. Then limit their progression just to the Carrion Tribe. That should keep them busy.

This gets around the "need" of taking a scroll to be read there and creates plot ideas.

What is the possessing spirit reporting and why? This can lead to future stories that bring the pCs back to the Wastelands once they have some experience.

The trick of the possession is to lead them- NOT FORCE them to go.

Just a thought if that is what you were looking for.

Something to think about, with new players (or experienced players in a new world) sometimes you have to cue them in on something that should be common knowledge to their race or class. Keeps away hard feelings later of being cheated or forced.

oop ignore the above. I only read the first handfull of posts.

Seems like a long stretch of terroritory. Are there other considerations than just causing death and chaos? You're involving travel through three countries. I'm guessing there should be more to this than just a disease.
