Eberron: Artificer Craft Reserve

The Artificer gets a 'craft reserve' which are basically psuedo-XP for the purpose of crafting items, correct? The only reason I'm unsure is just how few they seem to get for that purpose.

I mean, if even the simplest potion costs 50 gp, 20 points of craft reserve seems a tad light, I suppose. I don't see any reason to raise it, mind you, it just seems like the artificer isn't really going to be manufacturing as many items as I thought he might.

You are correct. Though I don't really thing of it as low. 20 points is enough to make 10 potions, isn't it? And that's just for first level. Plus any real XP the artificer wants to spend.

Well, let's see...the formula for a potion is essentially (level of spell x level of caster). So a 1st level spell by a 1st level caster is....1 point. Hmmm. OK, so that's actually a pretty good deal, XP wise. GP-wise it's much less so, at 12 gp a potion, but one would assume the party would pitch in, there.

Looking at the formulas now, I can see that I overestimated the xp-costs on some items. It's clearly plenty. 80 xp points will get you a +1 weapon, assuming you can get a masterwork version and pay the costs. A +2 weapon would be 320 gp. Again, pretty good.

Thanks for pointing that out.

You'll have to hold off on the potion-making until 2nd level, though.

Just for the record, I've been playing a Magic Item-creating Cleric in one campaign for the last 6 months or so, and for the most part, making magic items has been a bitch. Not only did I have to spend several feats for it, I ended up at least a level behind the rest of the group. I wished there could be something to at least lessen the penalties for opting to be the item crafter- and lo, the Artificer was born!

I just started playing an Artificer in another campaign, and he's 2nd level at the moment. I love it. Not only do I not have to spend the feats, he gets bonus XP for making items! True, it's not a huge amount, but any little bit helps. Plus, at 20th level, if an Artificer has all of the Artisan feats, he could make a +5 Tome or Manual and spend less XP than a normal person making a +3. If that's not an accomplishment, I don't know what is.
