Eberron: Is it *really* a swashbuckling kind of campaign setting?

I was checking out some stuff on Eberron and it notes that it's a swashbuckling kind of world. I'm no expert on the world so what's the deal? What makes it a swashbuckling kind of campaign setting?

Well, if it's a kitchensink campaign setting - and many points speak for this notion - it's definitely a swashbuckling setting, too :D;).

I tend to consider it more of a two-fisted pulp type of setting; D&D meets Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Maltese Falcon. Swashbuckling is a similar, yet distinct, vibe that I don't think Eberron really has.

I think swashbuckling style and theme, while present, is a misnomer. It's more Pulp and Film Noir in attempted feel, and actually uses a couple of subtle mechanics to reinforce it, such as the alignment grey areas, the feel of Sharn, and the implications of just how special the PCs really are.

I agree.
At least that is how I am playing it because that is how it came across to me as feeling.

From the small amount I played it doesn't feel swashbuckler like. Right now it feels like a Forgotten Realms type world. Then again we only played 2 games, both were TPK's. We all died in the module in the back of the book, then the DM had our 1st and 2nd level characters fight a 5 headed Hydra, so Ebberon is still a little iffy in my book.

I've played that module too. There's no 5 headed hydra to fight. At least there wasn't in my game. But I promised not the read the adventure since I was playing in it. Maybe I just have a better DM? ;)

I think your DM is a little iffy. ;)

I'll second that.

I had just 3 first level characters go through the first module, a warforged fighter, a human artificer, and an elven wizard. They kicked butt and I didn't change anything about the module. They just played it intelligently and rolled well.

Eberron rocks.
