[Eberron] The names in Five Nations are pretty bad

The Five Nations were one nation (called Galifar) until about a hundred years before the campaign starts. I think it makes sense that you would have mostly the same names.

Though politically unified, the Five Nations were always rather different culturally. That's why a sucession dispute spilled out into such a massive conflict.

If we're trying to "assign" real world countries to the Five Nations, I always found Breland to be more American than English (very large country, its people aren't very religious and pride themselves on being open-minded).

Uh, that doesn't sound like America at all.

America has states that are as large as countries in Europe. You really can't put a sterotype on Americans, other than the fact that we think we are the center of the world.

Perhaps it doesn't sound like modern America, but historically America has prided itself on being very open and tolerant of other religions. See the pieces of the Constitution that mention separation of church and state.

But I'm gonna stop here because I feel like it'll either go into a debate about politics or religion, both of which are against EN World's "constitution." :p

Just to clarify, I was specifically referring to the idea that America is less religious than Britain, which is measurably false. :)

I tried to bold the relevant part of what I was quoting, but it's not too noticeable on this site, heh.

Precisely.

I'd like to point out that the English-German comparison (without getting into historical migration patterns and such-like) falls apart as soon as you look a few steps in the other direction and compare Germany to Poland. Big difference in culture, despite the fact that Poland has spent most of it's existence being ruled by other nations, and is right next door.

Anyway, Merkuri, i like where you're going with your comments and observations. :)

I have to admit, I think Beaf is a silly name though.

I think it's fine, even for a woman's name. I'd prounounce it "BAY-off", which I believe is probably closer to what the designer's were going for. I highly doubt that they would insert the possibility that there are women running around called "Beef".

I'd like you to show me, via link or cut and paste, where exactly this separation is to be found in the US Constitution.

America is a very religious land, and is open and tolerant of others as well.

Whizbang: It would be pronounced 'seed' most likely, that's what. Or 'seedy'.
Eh. Unless the character is a druid, I don't see the issue. It's a simple word, so it's going to have a lot of meanings in a lot of languages.

I always thought of gnomes being Italian for some reason, i dunno. I get a serious Leonardo da Vinci vibe off the little buggers.
Do I have a sourcebook for you!
