As a PoC who started gaming in ‘77, I can relate to the inclusivity issue quite well, even though I’m a little too brown to passé blanc.
And I’ll say this: even though I was never a homophobe, I did ape their behaviors and language- peer pressure is a bitch. It wasn’t until my sophomore year of college (1987-88) that I eradicated that element from my life.*
All of which is context for saying I never gamed with any LGBTQ community members who were out (to me) until the 2000s. I have to accept a part of that could very well be due to my homophobic social camouflage. But also, the general “straight white guys only” atmosphere of the hobby also contributed. After all, I’ve only gamed with a handful of women 1977-today, and only a few more other PoCs.
