ECL Hit Die Question

In a race that an ECL is applicable to, what determines whether the monster gets its monster hit dice and its class hit dice or just its class hit dice?

Another question about ECLs just came to mind. Are the class and cross class maximum levels the character level or the character level plus the ECL. Example would a 1st level Tiefling rogue (who is ECL +1) have a class/cross class maximum of a 1st level character or the class/cross class maximum of 1st level + 1 level for the ECL +1?

Thanks in advance.

Creatures get racial HD if they have more than one. A dwarf has only one HD, so it is replaced by class HD; ogres have more than one so they keep it.

Skill maximums are based on total HD, racial HD + levels.

Ok, which would explain why the creature I had in mind, a medusa keeps her HD. Thanks.

So if am reading you correctly, a 9th level tiefling would still have the maximums of a 10th level character?

Thanks for your help, BTW.

Nope; a generic tiefling only has 1 HD, so classed tieflings don't keep that hit die.

A 9th level tiefling has the skill maximums, feats, and extra ability points of a 9th level character. It just took the tiefling 9000 more XP to get there.
