ECL question

What I really want to confirm is the ECL of a Half-Celestial?

But also, if there are any formal rules on ECL apart from those in the DMG and the issue in Dragon that dealt with the issue, could someone link me to them, or suggest where I can find them?

And which should take precedence?

There aren't any "official" ECL rules in the DMG, just a table of a few examples.

Really, it's just DM's call. I personally use Soldarin's ECL system, tweaked slightly. For example, he has the Giant Eagle and Giant Owl (two nearly identical creatures) having different ECLs. Not a big nitpick, it still works as a great guideline, but you should still use your own discretion.

So, look at that table, and maybe bump it a level or two in one direction as needed. His page:

DMG p. 22 does say that a half-celestial is worth the class levels +3.
