Effective Caster Level

The question I have is lets say I have a 10th level wizard and I take a prestige class that increases my effective caster level. Let say I take 3 levels of that class. Now I have the spellcasting ability of a 13 level wizard. If I take 2 more levels of wizard, making me 12wiz/3 prestige class, would my caster level be 15 or 13?

15. I'm not sure why you think it might be 13.

You would be 15th.

I think the 13 comes from the fact that the effective levels were gained before the next 2 levels of wizard.

No matter when you gain your levels in any class, effective spell casting levels are based on a type of spell casting class, and are always there.

Ya, 15. Prestige classes with effective spellcasting levels are the way to go for Wizards most of the time.

Btw, Gilwen, each wizard level is also in essence: +1 effective caster level, if it helps you.
